The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. Appropriate interventions are applied and patient progress is evaluated. The ED RN evidences skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. Utilizing principles of relationship-based care, the RN alleviates anxiety, provides information, and addresses pain, discomfort, and safety. The RN assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. The RN connects with patients and families during triage and identifies the initial management of patients, assigning priority of care in accordance with triage standards. Rapport is established with patients and families by addressing comfort needs, listening carefully, assessing nonverbal communication, and providing frequent updates. The RN conducts primary assessments of critical need, detecting and documenting any major deviations from norms within acceptable time frames. Necessary steps and interventions are identified accurately. Direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data are used for secondary assessment. The RN identifies contributing factors, health history, and events or activities preceding the emergent health event. Psychosocial needs are assessed for each individual, including family dynamics, and any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse is documented and reported. Reassessments are conducted to identify patient responses to treatment and any changes in condition. The RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. Teaching others and delegating tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice are part of the role. The RN understands the personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. Patients, parents, or families are prepared for diagnostic procedures and treatments. Appropriate referrals for post-emergency care are made. The RN teaches patients what is needed to continue care and healing at home. Assessment of patient and family learning styles is conducted to maximize understanding during education and discharge instructions. Questions are asked to evaluate retention of key points. Efforts are made to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging them as the central focus of all care and services. The importance of creating a healing environment is embraced as a key element of professional nursing practice. Patients and significant others are kept informed of the process of care, and patient/family needs are anticipated.
