Summary The Fitter is responsible for assembling structural frameworks and housings from raw material. They prepare and fabricate metal components for the welding process. Duties and Responsibilities Verify conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes. Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers. Set up and operate fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components. Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting. Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter using hand scrapers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment. Review any parts received from kitting area and compare the parts to the print. Fabricating and revising fixtures, jigs, and gauges. Operate and/or use forklifts, cranes, hoists, slings, grinders, cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, and instruments of measurements. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and Work Experience Associates or Technical School. Minimum of one-year of related experience and/or training. Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements This position may require a government security clearance. Travel Requirements This position may involve travel up to 10% of the time. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
