This role assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN provides care to these patients utilizing the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources. The responsibilities include performing duties specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care is essential. The RN completes an initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care. The plan of care must align with unit standards and based on patient and family needs. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. It is necessary to modify the plan of care based upon continuous evaluation. Taking responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents is critical. Effective communication with others directly and in private is necessary to resolve issues. Constructive feedback should be offered to assist in the professional development of peers. Conferring with colleagues to expand the knowledge base is encouraged. Identifying personal learning needs and taking the initiative to address them is expected. Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is mandatory.
