We're looking for a Transportation Mechanic who's ready to work hands-on with a large, technically advanced fleet that includes everything from passenger vehicles to heavy trucks, construction equipment, and specialized rigs equipped with hydraulic and pneumatic lifts. This is a role for someone who loves solving mechanical challenges, learning new systems, and taking pride in keeping critical equipment safe, reliable, and ready for the field. In this position, you'll perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical systems, and grow your expertise across a wide range of technologies including hydraulic and pneumatic tool circuits, gasoline and diesel engines, electric and air brake systems, automatic transmissions, HVAC, computerized automotive systems, and electro-hydraulic controls. You'll also develop skills in welding, fabrication, and diagnostic software as you support the full lifecycle of OPPD s fleet. Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities: Assist in the performance of scheduled and nonscheduled maintenance and repair on all the District's transportation, construction and coal handling equipment. Become increasingly familiar with the maintenance, operation and repair for all passenger cars, trucks, mounted equipment and construction equipment owned and/or operated by the District and other customers . Learn trouble-shooting and repair of related components such as hydraulic and pneumatic circuits, gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic, air and electric brakes, automatic transmissions, computerized automotive systems, emissions systems, electro-hydraulic control systems, HVAC and all other components used on the vehicles and equipment. Become familiar with the District's welding and fabrication equipment. Assume more difficult tasks in maintenance and repair of equipment in preparation for entering the Transportation Mechanic Apprenticeship Program. Complete routine and preventive maintenance inspections and be capable of directing other lower classifications in the performance of these and other minor repair tasks. Provide Crew Leader feedback on vehicles, equipment and processes for overall improvement of fleet consistency, reliability and quality; as well as needs for general and technical training. Communicate with customers, mechanics, and crew leaders about the ongoing condition and status of vehicles and equipment. Qualifications Required Associates Degree in Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, AG Equipment, Construction/Heavy Equipment and/or other Transportation Maintenance. Two (2) experience in related field, excluding COOPs and internships Must have a valid driver's license. Must have (or be able to obtain within six months of hire) a Class A Commercial Driver License. Experience in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of vehicles (passenger cars, light duty trucks and medium duty trucks) and construction equipment, and/or fleet shop operations for an electric utility, independent shop, dealership or similar/related business. Must demonstrate good communication and customer service skills. Must be available to work a rotating shift of 8 weeks of 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and 4 weeks of 3:30 - Midnight Position will start at our Elkhorn Service Center and then rotate though all 4 of our Service Centers on a 6 - 12 month rotation Desired Knowledge of hydraulic system operations and maintenance is desirable. Welding and fabrication experience. Time Demands: This position is considered an essential position meaning when business necessity and continuity needs are emergent, this position will be required to report to work and may be required to work hours beyond an employee's normal shift. Maintain regular and predictable attendance in alignment with Departmental policy. Must be available for overtime work and call-outs as required to ensure continuance of efficient operation. Environment : Office/Field: Work will be performed both in a modern office environment amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises and outside in a variety of weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, cold, wind, etc.), terrain, and other natural environmental hazards as well as pollen and other airborne allergens. Generation Plant: Work will be performed inside with exposure to industrial building conditions and will be exposed to extreme temperatures, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation and exposure to sounds. Noise levels may require shouting in order to be heard.
