Overview At PNNL, we focus on core capabilities divided among major departments called Directorates, each emphasizing specific scientific research or functions with dedicated leadership and budget. The Emerging Threats and Technologies Division, a part of our National Security Directorate, is composed of over 400 experts in fields like cyber, nuclear, intelligence, policy, and data science. Our interdisciplinary teams tackle difficult challenges to create innovative solutions integrating policy, analytics, science, and technology. As adversaries gain access to advanced technologies and materials, protecting U.S. residents and visitors becomes increasingly complex, from cyber threats to biological weapons. Our mission at PNNL is to enhance our defenses against these multifaceted threats through cutting-edge research and technology. Responsibilities PNNL seeks passionate PhD interns for the National Security Internship Program (NSIP) within the Emerging Threats & Technologies Division. Interns will engage with significant challenges across national security, energy, and science, applying advanced analytical techniques that contribute to national safety. You may work within one of several technical groups including: Cyber Resilience Foundations: Focus on enhancing system security postures involving new technologies. Cyber Risk Reduction: Engage in applied research that deconstructs complex systems to improve security measures in critical sectors. Innovative Security Solutions: Address the challenges of integrating cyber and physical security measures in evolving environments. Global Research Analysis: Highlight emerging technologies and their implications for national security. Strategic Threat Analysis: Provide insights and solutions for complex domestic and international security challenges. Positions are available in Richland, WA and Seattle, WA. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be PhD students enrolled in an accredited program. A minimum GPA of 3.3 is required. Preferred Qualifications: Disciplines of Interest: Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Analysis, International Relations, and others related to national security.
