Our dedicated workforce supports various scientific initiatives through our Science & Technology directorates, which include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. The Energy and Environment Directorate (EED) is at the forefront of this endeavor, addressing the crucial missions of the Department of Energy (DOE). Our team works diligently to modernize the power grid, improve renewable energy utilization, and resolve complex issues in nuclear science and environmental management. The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division (EI&BD) is committed to advancing an efficient, resilient, and secure energy system by leveraging basic and applied research. Our Power System Modeling Group (PSMG) is dedicated to developing innovative simulation and optimization tools to enhance grid performance across all levels. Responsibilities We are inviting applications for a Principal Research Engineer with extensive expertise in power system modeling and grid resilience. This key role will lead groundbreaking research that integrates transmission and distribution domains, pushing the boundaries of grid modeling and analysis. Lead cutting-edge research and development in power system modeling and resilience. Develop and validate multi-domain modeling frameworks for grid planning and control. Act as Principal Investigator for DOE and ARPA-E projects focused on grid reliability. Build multidisciplinary teams that combine expertise in modeling, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Mentor and guide early- and mid-career researchers to foster technical growth. Collaborate with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, academia, and national laboratories to promote technology advancements. Publish research findings, present at conferences, and establish PNNL as a leader in power system resilience. Qualifications Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree and 9+ years of relevant experience, or Master's degree and 7+ years of relevant experience, or PhD with 5+ years of relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications: Expertise in transmission and distribution systems, including their operational dynamics. Experience managing complex projects and leading interdisciplinary teams. Proven role as PI in federally funded research projects. Understanding of grid dynamics and resilience modeling. Familiarity with co-simulation tools and workflows. Knowledge of distributed energy resources and transactive energy concepts. Experience in securing research funding and publishing impactful findings. Leadership activities in professional organizations like IEEE PES. Strong communication skills to effectively convey technical concepts. Additional Information This position requires obtaining a federal security clearance, which involves a thorough background investigation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and able to meet eligibility criteria for access to classified information. Location: PNNL offers a vibrant work environment in eastern Washington State, known for its outdoor recreation and a reasonable cost of living.
