Summary:As an Apprentice Cable Splicer, you¿ll gain experience inspecting, testing, installing, connecting, and removing cables in underground systems and substations. You¿ll learn to work with switchgear, transformers, protectors, and a wide range of specialized splicing equipment, including paper ¿ insulated lead cable and solid dielectric cable. You will also operate heavy construction and hydraulic tools, supporting the safe and reliable delivery of power to OPPD customers.Whether you¿re growing within OPPD or bringing experience from outside the utility industry, this role is ideal for individuals with strong mechanical aptitude, a desire to learn, and the physical capability to work in demanding field environments from confined spaces to varying weather conditions and high ¿ traffic areas. Successful candidates must be able to obtain a Class A CDL within six months and be committed to progressing through the apprenticeship and ultimately advancing to Cable Splicer.If you're ready to build technical expertise, contribute to essential infrastructure, and grow with a mission ¿ driven public power organization, we encourage you to apply.Responsibilities: Assist in constructing, maintaining, and operating all manner of overhead and underground splicing and distribution system equipment and facilities. Inspect, test, install, maintain, connect, terminate, and remove cable on underground equipment, including equipment in the network and in District substations. Operate heavy construction equipment including digger derrick trucks, reach trucks, and other equipment. Operates hydraulic tools, pneumatic tools, and various hand tools. Perform construction and maintenance tasks on related equipment such as switchgears, transformers, protectors, etc. Splice paper-insulated lead covered cable and solid dielectric cable. QualificationsRequired: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent GED. Must possess the mental and physical potential to complete the four-year IBEW Apprenticeship Program in order to eventually progress to Cable Splicer. Class A Commercial Driver¿s License (CDL) or have the ability to obtain one within a six (6) month period. Ability to work overtime as required. Good communication and customer service skills. Incumbents must reside or be able to relocate within a thirty-five (35) mile radius of the Service Center/Area Office. Desired: Previous experience in the electrical field. Experience in installation, construction, or maintenance of overhead and underground facilities .
