Description The Dean of Students is a year-round administrative faculty member appointed by the Head of Student and Academic Life to assume responsibility for the academic, social, and personal welfare of the student body. In consultation with the Head of School, Head of Student and Academic Life, and Dean of Faculty, the Dean of Students is responsible for the tone and quality of residential life, all aspects of student discipline, for developing a close relationship with students and an understanding of student issues. The Dean of Students cultivates morale, spirit, traditions and standards, and maintains close liaison with faculty, parents, and guardians. The Dean of Students reports to the Head of Student and Academic Life. Reporting to the Dean of Students are the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life, the form deans, the Director of Day Students, the Medical Director, the Director of Counseling, the Assistant to the Dean of Students, the Director of Student Activities, the Student Wellness and Response Coordinator, the Adviser to International Students, and advisers to all student publications. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Student Life and Programming with the Director of Student Activities, Health Services Team, Dean of Equity and Inclusion, and others, plans and oversees the opening of school (registration and new student orientation) supports the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life in implementing the Choate Leadership Institute with the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life, form deans, Student Wellness and Response Coordinator and others, develops and implements programming that addresses the issues of character, relationships, decision making, and personal wellness plans and directs school meetings with the form deans, oversees form meetings organizes annual Dean of Students special program(s) with the form deans, oversees student discipline, leaves of absence, and decisions about student re-enrollment contracts meets regularly with the Health Services/Counseling Team to support student wellness with the advisers to Student Council and the Judicial Committee, coordinates their election processes and supports the operations of each group meets weekly with the President of the Student Council serves as liaison with the Trustee Student Life & Athletics Committee, student government, and all student organizations works with the Parent and Community Relations Manager on communication and interaction with parents and guardians Residential Life and Advising with the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life and form deans, designs, revises, and implements the advising program with the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life and form deans, orients house advisers and oversees their professional development with the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life, form deans, and advisers, oversees the condition and safety of student residences assists in the prefect selection process supports the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life, who evaluates faculty performance in advising Administrative meets weekly with the Senior Officer team edits, writes, and updates the Student Handbook works closely with the Student Wellness and Response Coordinator and Head of Student and Academic Life to review and implement the School's Sexual Misconduct Policy prepares and/or monitors the annual budgets for student services maintains and coordinates the annual schedule for meeting slots (school meetings, wellness blocks, advisory group meetings, college counselor meetings, form meetings, etc.) Supervision and Personnel appoints, supervises, and evaluates direct reports chairs the Student Resource Group interviews prospective faculty members and assists in making faculty and administrative appointments The Dean of Students assists the Head of Student and Academic Life and Head of School in implementing and reviewing all school-wide policies and procedures. The Dean of Students takes on other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head of Student and Academic Life and Head of School. RequirementsJob Qualifications: Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required for Placement in Position B.A.; master's degree strongly preferred Five or more years of experience working in secondary school or higher education; boarding school experience strongly preferred Three or more years in school administration, preferably including management or oversight of colleagues; boarding school experience strongly preferred Demonstrated commitment to equitable and inclusive practices in support of students and faculty members Effective and efficient collaboration with other adults to support students. Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) clearly with students, colleagues, parents/guardians, and others in support of student growth, learning, and wellness. Ability to respond to a wide range of challenges presented by adolescents, supporting them within the scope of the faculty member's training and abilities and/or directing them to additional resources as needed. Sound judgment; able to remain cool under pressure. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Team-building skills; development and maintenance of positive interpersonal relationships. Strong oral communications, presentation skills, and writing ability. Fluent (read/write/speak) in English. Problem solving and critical thinking skills. Interpersonal skills-displays a high level of tact, diplomacy, and professionalism. Plans work activities and uses time efficiently. Quality control-demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness and monitors own work to ensure quality.
