Part-Time Aquatics Lifeguard This recruitment is to fill several part-time vacancies in the Parks & Recreation Department. The recruitment is open on a continuous basis and may close at any time with or without prior notice. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply immediately. Selection of candidates will be on a first come, first served basis. As applications are received, they will be immediately reviewed. Candidates who clearly best meet or exceed the minimum qualifications will be invited to the testing process. The position works a variable work schedule with an average of 18 to 25 hours per week, limited to 1,000 hours per fiscal year and is "at-will". Candidates must be available to work all assigned shifts, including evenings, weekends, split shifts, and holidays. Under general supervision, monitors aquatics facility and guests, enforces established rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; performs pool and facility maintenance; coordinates and organizes activities and special events; performs related duties as required. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: Promotes a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior; consistently enforces rules and policies. Provides customer services and information to guests and visitors; reports and resolves complaints, special requests, safety conditions, security issues, and illegal activities within scope of authority. Prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the conduct of swimming pool patrons; monitors activities in the facilities for individuals who may need assistance or guidance. Assures cleanliness of pool and facility and that all equipment is in safe operating condition; cleans and maintains pool area; performs regular water tests, monitors pool chemical levels, and makes necessary adjustments to pool chemical balance; maintains inventory of chemicals and supplies. Warns patrons against dangerous practices such as running on the deck and diving into shallow water; instructs non-swimmers and weak swimmers to stay out of deep water. Enters the water to rescue persons in distress; resuscitates rescued swimmers; administers first aid to the injured, and calls Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on serious accident cases. Organizes and coordinates special events; teaches first aid, water safety, and swimming classes. Maintains daily logs and prepares incident, accident, and operations reports. Assists with planning and implementation of City recreation programs and special events. Supports the relationship between the City of Rosemead and the constituent population by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education, training, and experience guidelines: Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Must be able to swim 500 yards within 10 minutes. Must be able to pass a 2-minute water tread test and brick tow under 1 minute, 15 seconds. Must be sixteen (16) years of age or older and have a valid work permit, if applicable. Knowledge of City policies and procedures, rules and regulations governing the maintenance and safety of municipal aquatics facilities and equipment, lifesaving methods and procedures, swimming pool maintenance techniques and safety protocols, principles of water chemistry, chlorination, and pH balancing, customer service principles and methods. Skill in promoting a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior, monitoring pool facility and guests for violations of rules and safety standards, effectively using emergency techniques for standard water approach, rescue, and resuscitation, acting quickly and calmly in emergency situations, establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the public, understanding and interpreting City policies, regulations, and State and Federal laws, closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures. License and certification requirements: Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate and CPR/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer Certificate are required. All certifications must be obtained within 30 days of employment. The City will train and assist with certification. Important Notice Applications must be submitted online.
