Incentives and Compensation Details: The salary for new Border Patrol Agents ranges from: Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11, $63,148 - $120,145 per year. Locality Pay: Varies based on location. Overtime Pay: Up to 25% based on locality and additional qualifications. This career ladder position progresses from GL-9 to GS-11 to GS-12, allowing for automatic promotions after successful completion of the required duration at each level. Agents enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, which functions similarly to traditional and ROTH 401(k) plans. Incentive Highlights: Recruitment Incentive: New agents may receive up to $20,000, with distributions upon completing training and accepting priority locations. Retention Incentive: Potential for up to $40,000 in additional payments over four years. Duties and Responsibilities: As a BPA, you will be an essential part of a workforce dedicated to protecting American citizens, deterring illegal activities, and promoting national economic stability. Typical responsibilities include: Inspecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws. Preventing and apprehending illegal entrants and smugglers by employing surveillance techniques. Conducting investigations based on physical evidence related to illegal border crossings. Performing checks on vehicles and persons, as well as patrol duties using various government assets. Qualifications: To qualify for the GL-9 grade level, candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience related to law enforcement duties such as: Conducting physical searches for contraband. Apprehending violators and cooperating with law enforcement agencies. Preparing investigative reports and utilizing firearms proficiently. For those with additional law enforcement experience, eligibility for the GS-11 grade level may be considered based on more complex responsibilities undertaken in previous roles. Requirements: - Must be a U.S. Citizen. - Have resided in the U.S. for at least three of the past five years. - Candidates must be under 40 at the time of selection unless they have prior federal law enforcement service. After hiring, successful candidates will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy for approximately six months for comprehensive training in law enforcement practices, physical techniques, and language instruction, including Spanish.
