Position Summary: Join our team as a Specimen Processing Specialist, where you will play a crucial role in processing and handling specimens according to established protocols. Your contribution will ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance with safety standards. You'll be responsible for proper labeling, documentation, and the timely distribution of specimens while upholding confidentiality and quality control. WORKING CONDITIONS: Contact with specimens, water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazardous body fluids, and hazardous chemicals. Varied work environment with sufficient noise and interruptions that may cause distraction and stress. Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for periods of up to eight hours or more. Close attention to detail, accuracy, and quality is required. OSHA risk factor: Category 1. DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills while fostering a positive and professional work environment. Maintain composure and accuracy in a fast-paced, high-volume production setting. Comply with all departmental, company, safety, quality, SOP, OSHA, HIPAA, and IATA regulations. Safeguard confidentiality and uphold proper patient identification at all times. Specimen Handling & Processing Collect, receive, handle, process, and transport all specimen types, including problem, leaking, frozen, and irreplaceable specimens. Perform specimen preparation tasks such as centrifuging, aliquoting (manual and automated), sorting, racking, labeling, and packaging. Meet established productivity standards for specimen processing and aliquoting. Prepare specimens for referral or remote labs while ensuring specimen integrity during packaging and transport. Handle urine, serum, SST, and other specimens as per procedural and location requirements. Data Entry & Documentation Accurately enter, track, and document specimen information in designated systems (e.g., SmartSheet, SPM). Complete and verify requisitions (both electronic and manual), ensuring accurate test codes, specimen types, and patient demographics. Maintain logs, temperature charts, worksheets, pending reports, and required documentation. Quality, Safety & Maintenance Ensure cleanliness and organization of workstations and processing areas through regular disinfecting. Conduct end-of-shift checks to verify no specimens are left behind. Adhere to PPE requirements and proper incident procedures for spills, breakage, or accidents. Identify equipment or system issues and escalate concerns through appropriate channels. Communication & Problem Resolution Identify and escalate specimen, requisition, or workflow issues to Leads, Supervisors, or Management. Utilize sound judgment when resolving issues and seek guidance when necessary. Communicate effectively with lab staff and provide assistance as required. Team & Operational Support Engage in training, meetings, cross-training, and process improvement initiatives. Assist in training new employees as needed. Show flexibility in scheduling to support departmental workflow. Perform any additional duties as assigned by Management, including driving or inter-building deliveries when required. Attendance & Professional Expectations Report to work on time and promptly notify supervision if unable to report for duty.
