ABOUT Navy Nurses are at the forefront of healthcare, providing exceptional care to military personnel and their families, as well as assisting communities in need worldwide. RESPONSIBILITIES In your role as an active duty Navy Nurse, you will deliver top-notch nursing care in various environments, including: Military treatment facilities both domestically and internationally Austere locations during deployments and humanitarian missions Onboard ships, including aircraft carriers and hospital vessels As a Navy Nurse, you may also engage in providing emergency care during natural disasters or contribute to humanitarian efforts, such as administering vaccinations in underserved areas. Collaboration with physicians, surgeons, cardiologists, and fellow nurses as equals is integral to your role, along with opportunities to develop leadership skills that will distinguish you in the field. WORK ENVIRONMENT Active Duty Navy Nurses can serve at over 250 Navy and medical facilities globally, from Hawaii to Japan and Washington, D.C., to Washington state. Potential locations include esteemed National Naval Medical Centers in Bethesda, MD; Portsmouth, VA; and San Diego, CA, as well as medical support roles aboard hospital ships such as the USNS Comfort and USNS Mercy. TRAINING & ADVANCEMENT Upon commissioning, you will attend Officer Development School (ODS) in Newport, RI, a comprehensive five-week program that introduces you to the responsibilities of Navy Staff Corps Officers, including military structure, leadership development, and etiquette. There are regular, competitive promotion opportunities available based on performance. EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES High School Students: Through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Nurse Option scholarship, you could receive up to $180,000 toward your nursing education at prestigious colleges and universities, with no military obligation until completing your program. Nursing Students: With the Nurse Candidate Program (NCP), you may qualify for an initial grant of $10,000, plus a stipend of $1,000 per month for up to 24 months, offering substantial financial assistance for your nursing degree. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS To join the Navy Nurse Corps, you need to: Be a U.S. citizen currently practicing in the U.S. Be a student or graduate in good standing from an accredited U.S. nursing program (CCNE) Hold a valid nursing license in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or a territory (new graduates must obtain a license within one year of starting Active Duty) Commit to a minimum of three years of Active Duty Be between the ages of 18 and 41 Maintain good physical condition and pass a full medical examination General qualifications may vary based on your intention to serve in Active Duty or Reserve Duty, and whether you are currently or previously served or are a first-time applicant.
