Job Description

About the Role: Become part of a prestigious tradition as a Deck Operations Specialist. This vital role involves leading the crew to maintain ship exteriors and handling essential operations on board. Key Responsibilities: Stand watch as helmsman, lookouts, and Boatswain Mate of the Watch. Repair, maintain, and stow equipment in preparation for sea operations. Serve as Search and Rescue swimmer. Conduct security watches both in port and underway. Operate sound-powered telephone systems. Participate in naval ceremonies and stolz-relations. Execute underway replenishment operations (transferring supplies between ships at sea). Operate small boats and engage in flight deck and amphibious operations. Direct and command tugs, barges, and other small craft. Supervise deck crew on cleaning, painting, and maintaining ships and their equipment. Guide boat crews during landing and rescue missions. Teach seamanship and assist during helicopter operations on the flight deck. Work Environment: As a Deck Operations Specialist, expect to perform most duties outdoors, collaborating closely with other crew members in physically demanding conditions. Over a 20-year career, approximately 60% will be spent assigned to fleet units, with the remaining 40% at shore stations. Training & Advancement: After completing Recruit Training, you'll attend a four-week training program where you'll learn essential skills such as general safety, watch standing, deck seamanship, and preventive maintenance. Further specialized training may be available based on future assignments. Educational Opportunities: You can earn college credits through the American Council on Education for courses related to this role, and benefit from degree programs offered by the United States Naval Community College that support your professional development. Qualifications & Requirements: To qualify for this role, you should: Be 18 years or older and legally authorized to work in the United States. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and articulate communication abilities. Exhibit resourcefulness, a good memory, curiosity, physical strength, manual dexterity, and teamwork capability.
