Providing specialized respiratory care in a critical illness and rehabilitation setting, this role involves administering intensive respiratory treatments and managing patient transport with a high degree of autonomy. The therapist evaluates patient needs, recommends treatment plans, and educates patients about therapies and equipment to support successful recovery and discharge. Key responsibilities include performing physician-prescribed respiratory therapies such as ventilatory support (both invasive and non-invasive), oxygen and aerosol administration, chest physiotherapy, suctioning, and advanced monitoring techniques like oximetry and capnography. Additional duties involve interpreting chest X-rays, conducting 12-lead EKGs with arrhythmia recognition, assisting in procedures such as bronchoscopy and chest tube placement, and managing tracheostomy care. The therapist also carries out arterial punctures, laboratory testing protocols, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS/ACLS), endotracheal tube management, and mechanical ventilation set-up and maintenance. Accurate documentation, communication with medical teams, and ensuring efficient therapy administration are crucial aspects of daily practice.
