Salary: $1,239.30 - $1,340.90 Biweekly Location : Princeton, WV Job Type: Full-Time Permanent Job Number: DOT26DX076A Division: West Virginia Department of Transportation District/Subdivision: District 10 Opening Date: 03/06/2026 Closing Date: 3/12/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Nature of Work The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator will report to the Mercer County Headquarters. Performs apprentice-level, unskilled to semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related buildings and structures. Position will be assigned in one of the following functional areas: Equipment Operator or Laborer. Uses light motorized highway maintenance equipment to repair and replace concrete and bituminous road surfaces, cleans culverts, and repairs shoulders. Performs rough carpentry and builds forms. Operates various maintenance equipment. Performs minor maintenance on engines and automotive bodies for highway maintenance equipment. May also mow or clear bush from along roads or DOH facilities using a hand scythe or hand mower. May plow snow using a light truck. Performs related duties as required. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Selected applicants will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, and obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. Pay Grade 10H Hourly Rate: $15.4913 Typical Duties and Responsibilities Transportation Worker 1 - Equipment Operator Operate a light truck or vehicle. Operate a forklift truck to load and unload trucks. May operate Endloader, Skid Steer, Rollers, Utility Tractor, and Brush Chipper. Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment. Plow snow using a light truck. Perform minor maintenance on the fleet of equipment and vehicles. Transport fuel to the equipment. Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control. Flags traffic at construction sites. Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. Skills and Knowledge • Knowledge of general safety procedures. • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment. • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment. • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair. • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others. • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders). Minimum Requirements REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION • No formal education required. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE • This is the entry-level classification in this series. No prior experience is required.
