Position Type: Certified School Counselor Date Posted: 3/6/2026 Location: New Horizon High School/Ninth Grade Campus Job Title: Counselor Reports to: Principal Dept./School: New Horizon High School (NHHS)/Ninth Grade Campus (NGC) Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Pay Grade: Professional PG 3 / 192 Days Minimum Salary: $65,088 Primary Purpose: The school counselor advocates for and supports all students in their personal, social, academic and career development. This is accomplished through a variety of approaches including, but not limited to, the delivery of guidance curriculum in various group sizes to support student development; individual and group counseling; individual student planning and goal-setting activities; consultation and coordination of activities to support student success, and effective interpretation of student assessment data. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Master's degree in counseling from an accredited college or university Valid Texas school counselor certificate Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents or guardians, and district staff Experience: Two years creditable experience as a classroom teacher Major Responsibilities and Duties for NHHS students and a portion of NGC studentsProgram Management Plan and implement a balanced comprehensive school counseling program that includes Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning and System Support. Collect and analyze data collaboratively to support the continuous improvement of a balanced comprehensive program. Collaborate with school personnel, parents and the community to promote comprehensive services for the assessed needs of the campus/district. Manage human, fiscal and/or other school counseling program resources to accomplish program goals. Guidance Curriculum Use accepted theories in addressing personal, social, career, cognitive and educational development. Attend to the diverse needs of students participating in classroom guidance. Plan and conduct structured group lessons to deliver the Guidance Curriculum effectively and in accordance with students' developmental needs. Involve students, parents, teachers, and others to promote effective implementation of the Guidance Curriculum. Guide individuals and groups of students to plan, monitor and manage their educational development, including information about intrapersonal effectiveness, interpersonal effectiveness, post-secondary planning and career readiness, personal safety and health. Counseling Services Use effective and accepted techniques to provide individual developmental, remedial and/or crisis counseling. Use accepted theories and techniques to provide group developmental, preventive, remedial and/or crisis counseling. Acknowledge a student's cultural context in the selection of counseling interventions. Coordination & Consultation Consult with parents, school staff and other community members to promote and increase the effectiveness of student achievement and success. Consult with school staff, parents and community members to promote understanding of human relations and student development, behavior and environment. Consider existing cultural context when consulting with parents, school staff and other community members regarding the unique and diverse needs of students. Coordinate people and resources in the school, home and community to promote student success. Use effective processes of referring students, parents/guardians and others to special programs and services. Student Assessment Adhere to legal, ethical and professional standards related to assessment. Use formal and informal assessment tools appropriately within the scope of practice and local district policy. Enhance the work of school staff and parents in guiding student goal setting by promoting understanding and use of standardized test results and other assessment data in alignment with the cultural and diverse needs of students. Possess and promote an understanding of potential cultural and linguistic bias in assessment tools. Interpret standardized test results and other formal and informal assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and planning in collaboration with school personnel. Leadership & Advocacy Provide leadership for the implementation of the school's comprehensive developmental school counseling program. Provide leadership in school's responsiveness to the personal and social needs of students. Provide leadership for the enhancement of learning environments that address the diverse needs of students. Advocate for a school environment that acknowledges and respects diversity. Advocate for specific and group needs of students. Advocate for school policies, programs and services that are equitable and responsive to diverse groups of students and enhance a positive school climate. Advocate for the elimination of factors that may impede student achievement and school success. Advocate for the comprehensive developmental school counseling program and school counselors' ethical and professional standards within school and community. Professional Behavior & Standards Demonstrate professionalism, including commitment to continuous professional development. Engage in reflective practices to enhance professional development. Establish and maintain professional relationships with administrators, teachers and other school staff, parents and community members. Accept accountability for the use of time in delivering a full complement of services based on the assessed needs in all four components of a comprehensive developmental school counseling program. Adhere to federal, state, district and campus legal standards, policies, regulations and procedures. Commit to current professional standards of competence and practice. Promote and follow school counseling ethical standards. Demonstrate professional and responsible work habits. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise assigned counseling aide(s) and clerical employee(s).
