Quality Assurance Inspector (Topeka) Wieland Designs Topeka - Topeka, IN 46571 Position Summary The Marine Quality Assurance Inspector is a critical final quality gate responsible for verifying completed pontoon furniture assemblies, including helm chairs and quadrant/bench units, prior to shipment. This role ensures all products meet engineering specifications, customer requirements, safety standards, and cosmetic expectations. This position serves as the last line of defense in protecting Wieland Designs, Inc.'s brand reputation and customer experience. The Inspector must demonstrate strong technical aptitude, sound judgment, mechanical understanding, and the confidence to uphold quality standards in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Candidates must possess an analytical mindset and the interpersonal skills required to collaborate effectively across departments. Minimum Skills and Experience High school diploma or equivalent 3+ years of manufacturing inspection experience preferred (marine, furniture, automotive, or similar assembly environment) Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills in English; bilingual (English & Spanish) is a plus. Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams and diverse individuals Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of assembled products Basic math skills, with the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division Basic computer skills and ability to document inspection results accurately Ability to read a ruler up to 1/32 of an inch and use basic measurement tools (calipers, torque tools, etc.) Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, BOMs, and work instructions On-time attendance and a good attendance record are a must Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a team environment Must be adaptable to working in multiple areas. Must be able to follow directions and communicate directions clearly Understand and apply internal and external customer expectations Work overtime as needed and if given short notice Knowledge of ISO 9001 and 13485 is a plus; training provided as needed Experience with upholstered products and sewing quality standards is a plus Key Responsibilities Inspection & Quality Control Perform comprehensive end-of-line inspections of pontoon furniture assemblies, including helms and quadrant/bench units Verify structural integrity, fit and finish, hardware installation, and overall workmanship Confirm correct installation and torque of safety-critical fasteners and components Perform functional checks on hinges, storage lids, recline mechanisms, and moving assemblies Inspect upholstery for stitch quality, pattern alignment, foam integrity, surface defects, and cosmetic appearance Verify dimensional accuracy using calibrated measurement tools Ensure compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, ECNs, work instructions, and customer requirements Maintain inspection records, logs, and required documentation Read and understand the job traveler (schedule of product/daily schedule) Maintain an organized work area consistent with 5S principles Initiate nonconformance documentation when standards are not met Communicate inspection findings clearly to supervisors, team leaders, and production personnel Identify recurring defects and provide feedback to support corrective actions and continuous improvement Interpersonal Responsibilities Represent the QA function as the final quality authority prior to shipment Exercise sound judgment and objectivity, including the ability to escalate and request support from QA Management to hold product when standards are not met Collaborate with production, engineering, and manufacturing teams to resolve quality concerns Support root cause discussions and corrective action efforts Deliver quality data insights in a clear, actionable format Maintain professional, calm communication during high-volume or expedited production periods Key Characteristics for Success Exceptional attention to detail and ability to detect subtle defects Strong sense of accountability and ownership Mechanical and structural understanding of assembled products Confidence to uphold standards under production pressure Systems-oriented thinking to recognize defect trends Calm, professional presence with balanced decision-making Physical Demands and Work Environment The physical demands and work environment described below are representative of those encountered by employees performing the essential duties of this position. Physical Demands: Must be able to stand and remain physically active for 8 to 10 hours per shift. Frequent and repetitive use of hands and arms is required to handle, lift, and inspect materials and products. Visual acuity is essential, including the ability to distinguish color variations in fabrics, finishes, and materials. Must regularly lift and maneuver items weighing 810 pounds and occasionally lift items up to 40 pounds. Requires bending, reaching, and handling product components throughout the day. Ability to safely inspect and photograph large helm and bench assemblies from multiple angles. Work Environment: Manufacturing environment with moderate, consistent noise levels, primarily from staple guns, sewing machines, and other hand tools. Exposure to small airborne dust particles generated from fabric and upholstery handling. The work area is not climate-controlled; employees must be able to work comfortably in varying seasonal temperatures. Standard precautions and protective equipment may be required depending on the inspection area and materials handled. This role is ideal for a self-driven, technically capable professional who takes ownership of final product quality and understands the importance of protecting the customer experience at shipment.
