In this vital role, you will ensure the safe and timely delivery of freight between our service centers and customer locations. With an average annual pay of $81,000 and eligibility for our Tuition Reimbursement Program for graduates from approved trucking schools, this position offers a strong foundation for your career. Job Summary Local P&D or City Drivers operate various tractor-trailer combinations, handling freight within the geographic area of our service centers. Responsibilities include sorting, handling, loading, and unloading freight at company and customer sites. Primary Responsibilities Safely operate vehicles in compliance with DOT regulations regarding driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and hazardous materials transportation. Successfully meet the medical standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation and pass drug and alcohol tests. Load and unload freight using motorized equipment or manually, adhering to all state and federal DOT guidelines. Continuously navigate freight throughout the service center, including on various surfaces. Utilize the Dock Yard Management System to track freight shipments within the service center. Interpret shipping labels and complete necessary freight movement documentation. Rewrap, stack, or hand load freight as needed. Ensure the quality loading of all trailers. Secure freight inside trailers utilizing appropriate tools and supplies. Maintain frequent communication with service center personnel within a fast-paced environment. Be available to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules. This job description is not exhaustive; employees must be able to perform additional tasks as assigned. Job Qualifications Education: Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: Must be able to read, write, and speak English, with the ability to perform simple mathematics. Hold a valid commercial driver's license (CDL-A) with endorsements for hazardous materials and twin/triple trailers. Possess an acceptable motor vehicle record. Have a minimum of 12 months of previous tractor-trailer driving experience or be a graduate of a state-certified driving school. Ability to operate handheld tablets when required. Good oral communication skills are essential. Follow instructions and directions provided via two-way radio or phone. Familiarity with vehicle safety and control systems. Knowledge of DOT regulations regarding safe driving and the transportation of hazardous materials. Meet the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Satisfactorily pass drug and alcohol tests as required. Complete orientation and training programs conducted by an Old Dominion qualified driver trainer. Must be at least 22 years of age. Physical Demands The following physical demands are necessary for successful job performance. Reasonable accommodations may be made to assist individuals with disabilities. Must be able to sit for extended periods while driving. Ability to stand and walk on various surfaces, including uneven and slippery conditions. Frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling to handle and secure freight. Climbing in and out of the vehicle many times daily. Frequent pushing and pulling of freight weighing up to 500 pounds, with occasional heavier weights using mechanical aids as needed. Must be able to lift and carry freight weighing from 1 to 100 pounds, in various shapes and sizes. Regularly reach for and maneuver freight at various heights. Install and remove tire chains as required in inclement weather. Exhibit cognitive skills for attention and memory related to driving and safety regulations. Must meet any physical testing requirements consistent with job performance. Attendance is mandatory. Work Environment Employees will encounter various work conditions during their duties, including interaction with others, enclosed driving environments, and exposure to all weather conditions.
