HR Generalist Home Surplus is a multi-location retail warehouse superstore for cabinets, doors, and more, featuring in-stock products, expert design, and outstanding customer service at value prices. After operating as a single location for over 40 years, Home Surplus has expanded to 5 stores in NJ and MD in recent years as it grows into a national footprint. This is a hands-on HR Generalist position responsible for day-to-day HR across multiple locations. The role focuses on manager support in employee relations, structured hiring practices, and maintaining reliable HR processes across stores and support functions. Manager Support & Employee Relations Advise managers on attendance, performance, discipline, and terminations Ensure similar situations are handled consistently across locations Investigate complaints and document findings Reduce repeat problems through consistent documentation and manager follow-through HR Operations Administer BambooHR HRIS (employee changes, records, reporting) Coordinate onboarding and offboarding Track multi-state compliance requirements Coordinate benefits-related processes such as open enrollment communication and employee notifications (broker and payroll supported) Hiring & Onboarding Manage job postings and applicant flow Run background checks and onboarding steps Standardize hiring practices across stores Compliance & Policy Maintain handbook and policies Keep practices aligned with employment law Support leave and accommodation processes Process Consistency Create consistent documentation standards Standardize forms and workflows Help managers apply expectations consistently How the Role Works The position regularly works with operational leaders to address employee issues, guide manager decisions, and ensure decisions are documented consistently. Success in the role means: Issues handled consistently Managers making confident, consistent decisions Few recurring employee problems The HR Generalist is based in the Keyport, NJ office and requires communication across locations by phone and electronic means, with occasional travel for store visits. Requirements 3+ years HR generalist experience minimum. 4-8 years preferred.
