Traveling Senior Controls Engineer

This position requires 50% travel for onsite troubleshooting and installations. Candidates must have conveyor experience as well as experience coding PLC from scratch. Candidates need to be based close to either Taylor, MI; Troy, MI; Fairfield, NJ; or Farmingdale, NJ. Job Description: The Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for applying acquired technical skills and project experience to the execution of the controls/electrical engineering portion of all Company projects. The Senior Controls Engineer can work independently on complex projects, applying his/her engineering and project management skills to ensure accuracy and adherence to departmental standards, project schedules, prescribed resource limits and client requirements in the following areas: Electrical controls design and field installation/start-up. This position manages large projects or processes with limited oversight from manager; can coach, review and delegate work to more entry level professionals. Problems faced are often complex. Reports to: Manager of Controls Engineering Qualifications: Must be able to travel 50% of the time. Must have conveyor experience. Must have experience coding PLC from scratch. Bachelor's degree in Electrical engineering, computer, or related engineering field preferred. PLC Programming experience, preferably in Allen Bradley ControlLogix, PLC 5, and SLC 500 series PLCs Experience in controls design and project engineering in the material handling industry is preferred. Design Responsibilities: Understand electrical controls descriptions and device layouts for initial internal review and subsequent customer approval. Understand electrical drawings in coordination with electrical engineer per design specifications. Review controls drawings and programs with controls engineering manager for correctness and operational intent. Code PLC programs and prepare documentation based on project design specifications. Correct any deficiencies found. Internal testing with software engineering on system integration details. Project Management/Coordination Responsibilities: Plan, prepare and coordinate pre-commissioning/commissioning/field start-up activities. Develop and ensure adherence to a detailed commissioning schedule. Plan and coordinate the commissioning/start up schedule and necessary work with third party providers. Maintain up-to-date files of all relevant documentation on projects. Manage projects / processes, working independently with limited supervision. Consult with controls engineers and project managers to ensure proper coordination and adherence to schedules in mechanical installation, electrical installation, and field start-up. Prepare client acceptance forms. Problems faced are difficult and sometimes complex. Field start-up on PLC-controlled projects; support software engineering on start-ups. Coaching and reviewing the work of lower-level professionals. Respond to service calls in the field when required. May be assigned to special projects or required to perform other duties not listed above, which may vary from time to time as determined by management, to meet company needs.
