Salary: $26.91 Hourly Location : Public Services Building; 1150 Half Day Rd.; Highland Park, IL Job Type: Seasonal Job Number: 2026-06 Department: Public Works Division: Forestry Opening Date: 02/13/2026 Closing Date: Continuous Description of Primary Purpose Primary Purpose: Support forestry-related operations by assisting with parkway tree planting and maintenance, code enforcement, tree health monitoring (e.g., Dutch Elm Disease, Emerald Ash Borer), and tree inventory data collection. Work is performed in both field and office settings under the general direction of Forestry Section staff. Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the City Forester or Assistant City Forester. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist Forestry staff with enforcement of tree-related City Codes. Inspect trees and respond to resident inquiries. Survey parkways for dead, diseased, or hazardous trees. Perform minor pruning with hand tools to maintain visual clearance. Conduct follow-up inspections on contracted tree planting, pruning, removal, and grounds maintenance. Follow safe work practices. Perform administrative tasks such as filing, mailings, and general office support. Follow all safety protocols. Collect and input tree data to maintain the City's street tree inventory. Establish new landscape installations and nursery propagation by monitoring watering needs or other factors. Performs other related duties as requested. Education and Experience Required Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Coursework in arboriculture, horticulture, forestry, ecology, or a related field preferred. Experience: Minimum one year of forestry-related experience involving both field and office work. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the experience requirement. Certification or License: A valid driver's license. ISA Certified Arborist preferred. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Proficiencies: Apply sound judgment and maintain confidentiality Prioritize and complete tasks independently Operate computers and relevant software (e.g., Microsoft Office, GIS) Maintain accurate records and documentation Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Draft professional correspondence and reports Supplemental InformationTools and Equipment Used: Computer with Windows and Microsoft Office Suite, Smartphone, IPad, GIS, printer, scanner, copier, portable radio. Pruners, saws, shovels, and other planting tools. Physical Demands: Work is performed in both an office setting and outdoors along City streets and rights-of-way. Duties may require extensive walking, including on uneven terrain and ravine slopes with potentially poor footing. The position requires the ability to sit, talk, hear, and use office equipment such as computers and telephones. Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, the ability to focus, and color acuity.
