Salary: $13.00 - $16.00 Hourly Location : Marshall, MN Job Type: Temporary/Seasonal Job Number: 2026-00003 Divison: Community Services Department: Parks Maintenance Opening Date: 01/01/2026 Summary of Position Under direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Superintendent, a seasonal Park Maintenance Worker performs routine maintenance work within the City's parks. Duration: This seasonal position is expected to last from early spring until late fall. Days/Hours: Monday-Friday with flexible hours based upon the weather. Applications will continue to be accepted until all positions are filled. Essential Functions 1. Assist with landscaping duties including mowing, weed-eating, trimming trees and shrubs, pulling weeds, edging lawns, raking, watering plants, shrubs, and trees, sweeping and clearing fallen trees, and horticultural work (planting, transplanting, and watering). 2. Assist with maintenance of existing and construction of new park equipment (benches, tables, signs, etc.). 3. Repair and maintain equipment (playground, picnic tables, etc.). 4. Clean restrooms and picnic pavilions. 5. Pick up litter and debris from grounds and parking lots. 6. Empty trash containers. 7. Assist in maintaining athletic fields and other recreational facilities. This includes but is not limited to: dragging and marking athletic fields and courts, installation and maintenance of field equipment, mowing, etc. 8. Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to: hand and power mowers, tractor driven mowers, pick-up truck, water truck, hedge trimmer, pole saw, cement/asphalt saw, lawn mowers, weed trimmer, fertilizer spreader, and utility vehicle. 9. Assist with general maintenance on equipment, including refueling, changing oil, lubricating parts, and making minor adjustments, as necessary. 10. Operate a variety of hand tools, shovels, hoes, rakes, loppers, litter sticks, power mowers, edgers, and other equipment. 11. Assist in special events preparation including, but limited to community stage setup and teardown. 12. Adherence to all safety procedures, department procedures, and organizational policies. 13. Attendance is an essential function of this position. 14. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications and Competencies MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A. Valid MN Class D driver's license. B. Must be 16 years of age or older when the job begins. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS A. Preference will be given to candidates who are 18 years of age or older. B. Previous experience and satisfactory job performance for the City of Marshall. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge and skill in the care and use of hand and power tools. Ability to perform general parks maintenance activities. Ability to operate equipment and vehicles required for this position in a safe and efficient manner. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate and interact with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers. SUPERVISION EXERCISED NA SUPERVISION RECEIVED Close supervision by the Parks and Recreation Superintendent. PUBLIC CONTACTS Frequent contact with employees, department heads and supervisors, occasional contact with other municipal personnel, and the general public. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters and must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Performing the duties of this job require the use of equipment including but not limited to: pick up, water truck, hedge trimmer, cement/asphalt saw, pole saw, asphalt saw, weed trimmer, fertilizer spreader, utility vehicle, and other small hand tools. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk on uneven and rough terrain, paved and unpaved trails and sidewalks, as well as within the public rights of way. The employee is exposed to a wide range of outdoor weather conditions, occasionally working in extreme heat or cold weather. Work hours may vary; and when necessary, evening, weekend, and holiday hours will be required. Some positions may regularly work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Additional Information Eligibility for hire will require the successful completion/passage of all pre-employment screening requirements which may include: a driving and criminal history background check, and reference check. Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) Temporary and seasonal employees are eligible for Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) as required by MN Statutes 181.9447, subdivision 9. Temporary and seasonal employees will accrue ESST at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum accrual of 48 hours per calendar year. Employees must work at least 80 hours in a calendar year to be eligible for earned sick and safe paid leave time. Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) PFML is a public insurance program administered by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development ("DEED") ("state-administered program"), providing eligible employees with paid leave for family and medical reasons beginning January 1, 2026. Most workers in Minnesota will be covered by PFML benefits. Employees will generally be covered by PFML benefits if they have been paid at least $3,900 from an employer for work performed in Minnesota in 2025. The PFML plan is funded by premium contributions payable to City of Marshall's designated PFML insurance carrier, MetLife, and split between employers and employees pursuant to Minn. Stat. sec. 268B.14, subd. 3. Employers pay a portion of the premium contribution, while employees pay the remaining portion of the contribution through a payroll deduction, up to 0.395% of employee wages. Employees will be provided the complete PFML policy at time of orientation which explains how PFML can be used.
