The Municipal Fleet Technician is responsible for maintaining the safety, reliability, and performance of the City's fleet by performing skilled inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance on a wide range of automotive, emergency, and small, medium, and heavy equipment. This role supports essential City services by ensuring vehicles and equipment are ready for daily operations and emergency response. Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance available at affordable rates, Life Insurance, Income Continuation Insurance, and more available Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerforms automotive, medium/heavy truck, heavy equipment, trailer, small engine equipment, and emergency vehicle service, maintenance, and repair. Maintains vehicle functional condition by reviewing operator service requests, conducting inspections, and performing preventive maintenance. Diagnoses and repair failures of all types; engines, transmissions, hydraulic, electronics-computer, electrical, suspension, drive train, fuel system, chassis, and other mechanical components. Replaces parts and components on a wide variety of small equipment, automotive, heavy machinery, and attachments. Rebuilds and repairs several types of specialty equipment and attachments. Up-fits new equipment to meet the special requirements of each department, i.e., fire, police, sewer, public works, airport. Welds and fabricates components or attachments as needed. Maintains vehicle records by recording service and repairs on paper and computer-based systems. Provides roadside service repairs. Operates all municipal fleet equipment in order to diagnose and verify repairs. Subject to on-call work outside of a normal work hour/week schedule as weather or circumstances dictate i.e., snowstorms, tornados, fires, accidents, etc. Responds to or refers requests to the Fleet Manager or Fleet Supervisor. Employee relations: Foster a productive and collaborative work environment by coordinating work efforts with other City departments and employees. Minimum RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalent, and Formal course work in heavy equipment, medium/heavy truck, or automotive repair or minimum of one year of professional experience in mechanic repair, and Valid Driver's License and ability to pass the Class A written exams within 30 days of hire, and obtain a valid State of Wisconsin Commercial Driver's license (CDL) Class A with N Endorsement, without restrictions on air brakes within nine (9) months of hire. Preferred Qualifications Possession of a valid State of Wisconsin Commercial Driver's license (CDL) Class A with N Endorsement, without restrictions on air brakes. A combination of education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job may be considered. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The employee must furnish small tools up to 1-1/4 necessary to perform all light and heavy equipment work. Ability to meet the standards laid out in the City of Wausau Fleet Safety Program. Working knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic and electronic failure diagnosis and repair. Knowledge of welding, fabricating, and equipment maintenance. Ability to work hand and power tools. Must maintain good mechanical and electrical abilities and aptitude. Ability to cooperate and communicate with other members of the staff, supervisors, and public. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to follow directions, complete work, and establish priorities. Ability to perform complex diagnostic procedures using computers and diagnostic tools. Physical and Working Environment Employee performs standard activities requiring physical effort. The duties of the job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, lifting (lift and carry objects weighing 60 pounds or less, and push or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds), fingering, grasping, talking, hearing/listening (perceiving sounds in order to understand signals such as spoken directions, warning alarms, or requests for information), seeing/observing, bending/twisting (of the neck, back, or torso in order to reach, lift, tend machines, move materials, etc.), reaching (extending the hands or arms in any direction in order to push, pull, or grasp an object or control), feeling (using the sense of touch in fingers, hands, or other body parts to sense the position or quality of objects) and climbing (ascending or descending steps, stairs, ladders, scaffolding, or machines). Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception; the ability to adjust focus; and distinguish objects clearly at 20 inches or less with glasses, if needed. The employee may be exposed to disagreeable elements of high and low outdoor temperatures. The employee may be exposed to repetitive activities; intense or continuous noise; dirty environment; improper illumination; chemical hazards, and air contamination. The use of personal protection equipment (PPE) may be required, as there is significant exposure to hazards and conditions where there is a possible danger to life, health, or bodily injury, which may include mechanical, electrical, air contaminations, and heights. May be required to work in a physically confined worksite with cramped, small or restricted workplace making it difficult to stand, sit, or walk. Additional Information IMPORTANT! CDL TRAINING INFORMATION: The City of Wausau will make arrangements for the Employee's enrollment in the CDL training program and ensure that all necessary payments are made directly to the training institution. The City of Wausau will directly cover the full cost of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training program, including tuition, materials, and testing, as provided by an accredited training institution. As a condition of receiving this benefit, Employee agrees to comply with the following terms and conditions: Participate in the CDL training program, adhere to the program's requirements, and diligently complete all necessary coursework, training, and examinations. Take and successfully pass the Theory Training Assessment with a minimum 80% and participate in Behind-the-wheel Training to demonstrate proficiency sufficient to pass the State administered CDL skills test. Successfully pass the State administered CDL skills test and obtain a Class A CDL or Class B CDL with no restrictions. The City of Wausau will compensate regular wages for the class and test time. Any study time spent outside of class will not be compensable. Further, Employee agrees to remain actively employed with the City of Wausau for a period of thirty-six (36) months following the date of receipt of the certification. Should Employee fail to obtain the Class A CDL or Class B CDL, voluntarily terminate employment with The City of Wausau prior to the thirty-six (36) month date referenced in item E above or be discharged for cause prior to the thirty-six (36) month date referenced in item E above, Employee agrees and promises to repay the cost of the course noted in item A above. Costs will be prorated at 100% from 0 to 1 year, 75% from 1 to 2 years, and 50% from 2 to 3 years. This agreement shall be canceled in its entirety upon completion of thirty-six (36) months of continued employment or in the event of death, a permanent layoff, or a permanent disability of the employee prior to the thirty-six (36) month date.
