Salary: $20.77 - $27.10 Hourly Location : City of Lynden, WA Public Works Job Type: Seasonal Department: Public Works Division: Public Works Systems Opening Date: 03/02/2026 Closing Date: 3/15/2026 5:00 PM Pacific FLSA: Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit: N/A Description On a temporary, seasonal basis, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, including work on the City water distribution system and water meter system upgrades, and provides general maintenance duties as required. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerforms required labor and general duties in the capacity of a maintenance helper; may be involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, utility manhole and pipeline work, utility mainline/service line pipe laying, meter prep and replacement, utility system maintenance and repair and back-filling. Assists with the maintenance of public buildings and facilities. Operates small truck, tractor, and lawn mower. Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor. OTHER DUTIES Attends and participates in meetings pertaining to Public Works matters and issues as needed. Performs all duties in conformance with City policy, safety manual, Labor and Industries, and appropriate safety and security standards. Performs other related duties as needed and assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent, AND Minimum four (4) to six (6) months general employment experience. Knowledge of: Equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities. Basic record keeping techniques. Proper use of chemical in compliance with Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) recommendations and City Policies. Applicable safety policies and regulations. Skills & Ability to: Work safely. Perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time. Communicate effectively in writing and verbally. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other departments, and the public. Understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Work collaboratively in a team environment. Work independently in trouble-shooting and correcting problems. Prioritize work and adjust to changing conditions as needed. Remain calm and follow established procedures during emergency situations. Represent the City in a positive and professional manner. Support and promote the City's mission, vision, and core values in all aspects of job performance. Special RequirementsMust be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age. Must have a valid driver's license and appropriate insurance at the time of hire for work-related travel. Must pass appropriate background checks. The City of Lynden is an equal opportunity employer. As a temporary employee of the City of Lynden, seasonal/temporary employees will not receive vacation leave, and are not eligible for holiday pay, or health insurance programs. However, seasonal/temporary positions will receive sick leave benefits: and will accrue one (1) hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked and any other benefits required by law. Seasonal/Temporary positions lasting less than five (5) months are not eligible for retirement benefits. Should work be extended to five months or more, and if you work at least 70 hours per month during that time, the position will become eligible for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
