Position Type: Miscellaneous/Health & Physical Education Date Posted: 9/8/2025 Location: Lincoln School KEARNY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT'S BULLETIN #71Lifeguard Multiple Positions Available Application Deadline: Open Until FilledREPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal DESCRIPTION The Lifeguard ensures the safety and supervision of students, staff, and visitors in the school swimming pool. The position requires vigilant monitoring, enforcement of safety policies, and immediate response to emergencies while fostering a positive and supportive environment for all participants. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS 1. Applicants must be high school or vocational school graduates or possess an approved High School Equivalent Certificate. 2. Applicants must possess current and valid lifeguard certification issued by American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the YMCA or other recognized organizations. 3. Applicants must possess current and valid standard First Aid certification issued by the American Red Cross, The National Safety Council or other recognized organizations. 4. Applicants must possess current and valid CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification including adult, child and infant CPR as well as obstructed airway training issued by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council or other recognized organizations. 5. Appointees may also be required to possess current and valid AED (automatic external defibrillator) certification. 6. Appointees may be required to have training in supplemental oxygen support for adults, children and infants. 7. Applicants must have strong swimming and rescue skills. 8. Applicants must have effective communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and adolescents. 9. It is preferred that applicants have experience in a school, youth recreation, or aquatics setting. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Supervises all aquatic activities to prevent accidents and injuries 2. Patrols or monitors swimming areas to ensure safety and enforce rules and regulations 3. Rescues distressed bathers, using floats and other rescue equipment 4. Administers artifical respiration, resuscitation, and first aid treatment prior to the arrival of emergency medical staff 5. Cooperates with medical and law enforcement personnel at the scene of an emergency 6. Assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment 7. Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces rules, regulations and water safety policies 8. Informs bathers of restrictions in bathing area 9. Assists students, including those with disabilities or special needs, in safely accessing the pool 10. Maintains essential records and files 11. Conducts regular inspections of pool facilities and report maintenance or safety concerns 12. Maintains rescue equipment in preparation for immediate response 13. Maintains accurate records of incidents, accidents, and safety checks 14. Collaborates with teachers and staff during swim classes 15. Participates in required safety drill and professional development 16. Maintains professional conduct and serves as a positive role model for students. REMUNERATION: $25 per hour, 5.55 hours per day according to the district calendar.
