Position Type: Support Staff Date Posted: 11/13/2024 Location: IVC School District Date Available: ASAP Closing Date: 12/12/2025 TITLE Bus Mechanic GENERAL SUMMARY Under general direction of the Transportation Director completes maintenance of all district vehicles; determines needed repairs and/or replacements on the District's transportation fleet and maintenance vehicles; ensures the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition; provides written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements;, and performs all functions in a cost-effective and efficient manner. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Depending upon the individual assignment, the individual may perform all or a combination of the following: Diagnose potential vehicle and equipment malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements. Execute preventive maintenance programs for the purpose of maintaining vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition. Maintain tools, equipment and shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area. Prepare documentation (e.g. repairs, maintenance records, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or information to comply with regulating guidelines. Repair vehicle and equipment systems/components, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition. Replace defective vehicle and equipment parts/systems for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition. Inspect vehicles for the purpose of ensuring conformance to IDOT and other state standards Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules. OTHER FUNCTIONS Assist other district personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS This position reports to the Transportation Director. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of diesel and non-diesel mechanics Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, procedures and regulations Knowledge of safe working methods and procedures Proficiency with spreadsheet, word processing software Ability to communicate effectively Skills to inspect, repair and maintain vehicles and equipment, operate hand and power tools PHYSICAL DEMANDS Hearing conversations and other sounds (e.g. air leaks), near/far visual acuity/depth perception and accommodation.; seeing to conduct inspections, read, prepare and proofread documents; sitting, standing, or crouching for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, hand tools, and other equipment; significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store supplies; lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
