Salary : $50,211.20 - $80,255.60 Annually Location : Huntsville, AL Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 2026-00024 Department: Water Department Opening Date: 03/05/2026 Hiring Manager: Vince Moody Position Overview This position is a field position in the water distribution system. Performs water infrastructure inspection, assists in site plan reviews and inspections, installs, inspects and repairs water meters and assemblies, and performs checks of wells and booster pumps, as required. Works rotating weekly "on-call" period with night and weekend responses to emergencies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Performs site inspection of construction projects, commercial developments and subdivision developments to insure compliance with plans and specifications. Communicates non-compliance issues with contractors, engineers and department management. Assists Water Engineering Technician with inspection of large meters, fire vaults and special projects. Performs water main locates. Performs meter change outs, drop-ins, leak repairs. Assists Engineering Technician with operation and management of meter reading system. Assist in identification and management of leaks and unauthorized uses. Reads meters and provides inputs for monthly operational report. Assists in troubleshooting problems within the water system. Responds to operational and maintenance emergencies at wells and pumps on weekly rotating "on-call" basis. Performs daily checks of wells on weekends during "on-call" period. Performs emergency water main locates during "on-call" period Assists with planning improvements to wells, pumps and mains. Assists other Water Department personnel in operating pumps, isolating water mains and flushing for water main repairs, as needed. Coordinates with contractors and other utilities working adjacent to water mains. Performs checks of wells, booster pumps and tanks, as required. Verifies water quality parameters comply with US EPA, ADEM, and Health Department requirements. Performs required water quality analysis including chlorine concentration, fluoride concentration, and pH values. Education and ExperienceEducation: Graduation from High School required. Knowledge, Skill, and Ability: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of water meters, water mains, booster pump stations and well houses. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Knowledge in Computer skills to use word processor, excel, access, and other engineering software desirable. Experience: Minimum two years' experience working in Public Water Systems required. Experience with operation and maintenance of wells and pumps desired. Other RequirementsPhysical Requirements: Must be physically capable of performing manual labor in all weather conditions. Must be able to see well enough to operate motor vehicles and equipment. Must be able to hear well enough to communicate to other workers and supervisors, both by phone, cell phone and in person. Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs. Must be able to manually operate valves and equipment. Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check. Certifications or Licenses Required: Water Operator Grade II or Water Operator Grade I and mandatory to obtain Grade II within six months of employment. Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule Employer contribution percentage is set by the Retirement Systems of Alabama and changes annually.
