Salary : $73,334.51 - $80,856.73 Annually Location : City of Norwalk, CT Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 6024-01-2026 Department: Operations and Public Works Division: Department of Public Works - Fleet Services Opening Date: 03/05/2026 Closing Date: 4/5/2026 11:59 PM Eastern FLSA: Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit: 2405 Description of Work Position Definition: This position involves performing skilled mechanical work in the repair, maintenance, and overhaul of diesel and gasoline-powered City vehicles, trucks, heavy and light equipment, small engines, and related mechanical systems. The Fleet Mechanic will diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues, ensuring that all City vehicles and equipment remain in optimal working condition to support the operations of various City departments. This role also includes conducting routine vehicle maintenance, emergency repairs, and assisting with snow and ice control operations when necessary. General Duties: Diagnose, repair, and perform maintenance on diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles, trucks, heavy equipment, and small engines. Overhaul engines and transmissions, repair electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brakes, clutches, and other mechanical components. Use hand tools and power equipment to disassemble, repair, rebuild, or replace defective parts. Perform routine vehicle maintenance, including oil changes, tire balancing, and tune-ups. Inspect and repair vehicle bodies, structural components, and auxiliary equipment using welding and other mechanical techniques. Operate all City vehicles and equipment as necessary, following safety regulations. Discuss vehicle performance with operators and identify issues based on their feedback. Follow standard safety procedures and industry regulations while performing repairs and maintenance. Complete work orders and reports the status of vehicles and equipment to the Fleet Services Director. Additional Duties: Requisition materials, parts, and supplies from the Automotive Stores Clerk. Assist the Fleet Services Director in preparing vehicles and equipment for repairs by private vendors. Repair and maintain various mechanical equipment, including snowblowers, pumps, grass mowers, and other small engines. Conduct safety inspections of City vehicles involved in accidents. Install attachments on vehicles, including those used for law enforcement and emergency operations. Assist with snow and ice control operations when directed. Perform any other tasks related to vehicle and equipment maintenance as required by the Fleet Services Director. Supervised By: Receives general supervision from the Fleet Services Manager and/or their designee. Required Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesIn-depth knowledge of motor vehicle, heavy equipment, and mechanical system operation, repair, and maintenance. Strong understanding of metal fabrication, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems. Proficient in automotive welding and fabrication techniques. Skilled in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and automotive issues. Ability to interpret technical drawings, diagrams, specifications, and equipment manuals to guide repairs and maintenance. Capable of lifting and carrying objects weighing 25-50 pounds. Willingness and ability to work in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or vocational technical school completion in automotive repair (or equivalent). AND Four years of experience as an automotive mechanic. License or Certificate: Valid Class A or B State of Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must obtain ASE Certification in diesel engines within 180 calendar days of appointment to complete probationary period. Additional ASE Certifications are preferred but not required. Special Licenses/Certifications AND/OR Supplemental Information Note: Upon obtaining half of the necessary certification for ASE Master Medium Heavy Truck Mechanic status in the related job classification, the employee shall receive one (1) grade increase, payable with annual documentation that the certification is current. Upon obtaining full ASE Master Medium Heavy Truck Mechanic Certification in the related job classification, the employee shall receive one (1) additional grade increase, payable with annual documentation that the certification is current.
