This position reviews survey maps, legal descriptions, construction plans and right of way takes for accuracy and legal aspects; creates and prints topographical maps; conducts survey research, makes field measurements, downloads and processes survey field data; supports field crews; and maintains the city's benchmark system. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings city-wide, which may include part-time or full-time positions. Supervision Received and Exercised Receives general supervision from City Surveyor or higher level management staff. May act as a lead worker, exercising functional or technical supervision, including scheduling and assigning tasks, providing guidance, ensuring work is completed according to proper procedure, monitoring work progress, and reviewing results. Type of Examination A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date.The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only.The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years. Eligible List You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list.The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years. Selection Process Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Essential Functions: Reviews and calculates earthwork quantities and estimate costs; ensures the accuracy of computations, analyzes and prepares topographic, boundary and control surveys and land descriptions from field survey and record data; recommends changes as appropriate. Reviews consultant maps, plats and other applications for technical correctness and conformance with state and local ordinances. Develops, reviews and modifies survey drawings, plats, descriptions and reports according to sound practices of surveying and appropriate laws and codes. Performs technical research on surveying problems. Prepares data for use by field survey crews in performing their assigned tasks. Operates survey equipment and computer aided drafting tools (CAD). Directs and reviews the work of lower level technical surveying staff. Maintains constant awareness of progress on assigned projects to assure compliance with designated time and cost schedules for project completion. Assists in developing and recommending changes to the land surveying procedures. Serves as a member of a field survey crew including making field measurements and taking pictures. Enters field data into a data collection system. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment. Marginal Functions: Operates and secures assigned vehicle and other assigned equipment; determines whether vehicle is in good working order; maintains vehicle in clean and fueled condition. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSExperience: Two years of surveying experience. Training: Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major in surveying/geomatics or a field related to the essential functions. May substitute combination of equivalent education and related experience. The city assesses 1.5 years of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education. Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a Surveying Intern certificate on the date of application. May substitute four years of qualified surveying experience for certificate. Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of: Principles and practices of surveying. Principles of mathematics as applied to surveying work. Construction practices and terminology. Principles of lead supervision and training. Drafting principles. Recent developments, current literature and sources of information regarding surveying/geomatics. Survey requirements within the Public Land Survey System. Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment. Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations including surveying and subdivision laws and regulations. Skills in: Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Managing multiple assignments. Meeting critical deadlines. Ensuring project compliance with appropriate federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations. Using initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines. Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. CITY OF LAS VEGAS, NEVADA LVCEA Compensation and Benefits - 2026 COMPENSATIONAnnual Base Pay Increases Negotiated as part of the collective bargaining process. Step (Merit) Increase - typically awarded on the anniversary date of hire, up to range maximum. BENEFITSUniform Allowance Available for some classifications. Tool/Equipment Allowance Available for some classifications. Retirement Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after)for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the city's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS. Deferred Compensation The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options. Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental, and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium + 50% of dependent premium. Life and AD&D Insurance City provides $20,000 insurance at no cost. Additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance available for purchase. Disability Insurance City provides a long term disability policy: LTD: Employees who normally work at least 30 hours/week are eligible. Benefits may begin after 90 days of an approved disability leave. Payment is up to 60% of earnings, up to $11,000/month, and may not be supplemented with sick or vacation. Tuition ReimbursementEmployee Assistance ProgramANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAMS Employees covered by a City health plan and their covered spouse and dependents over age 18 are eligible for a comprehensive wellness physical exam annually at no cost to them at ARC Health and Wellness..
