Salary : $36,265.25 - $58,024.39 Annually Location : Jacksonville, NC Job Type: Regular - Full Time Job Number: FY26-00094 Department: Public Services Division: Lines Maintenance Opening Date: 03/05/2026 Closing Date: 3/20/2026 7:30 AM Eastern General Definition of WorkUtilities Maintenance Division: The mission of the Utilities Maintenance Division is to provide responsible operation and maintenance of the water and sewer lines, fire hydrants, valves, manholes, and lift stations to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Jacksonville. The City of Jacksonville is looking for a reliable Plants Maintenance Worker interested in servicing lift stations. The City has lift stations located at the lowest point of a gravity sewer system. It is designed to bring (navigate) sewage back up to a level to continue traveling to the nearest force main. Plants Maintenance Workers daily tasks include performing maintenance to wet wells, bar screens, float switches and bypass pumps as well as unclogging and removing debris to keep pumps running properly. Plants Maintenance Workers perform intermediate semiskilled work on a variety of installation, maintenance and repair projects in water and wastewater treatment plants and associated equipment and pump stations; may operate specialized equipment in connection with tasks; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Plants Maintenance Supervisor. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $36,265.25 - $47,144.82 depending on experience and education. Essential Functions/Typical TasksInstalling, repairing and maintaining water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and related equipment. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Assists the Plants Maintenance Mechanic in the installation of electrical distribution and control systems. Assists with troubleshooting, repairing, testing, painting, lubing and checking equipment. Assists with wiring voltage panel boxes, control motors and telemetry. Performs required safety procedures related to Confined Spaces and Hazardous Atmospheric Areas, as well as other related safety requirements. Inspects wastewater pumping stations and wells for proper operation. Assists in the performance of preventive maintenance on pumps and related plants equipment. Performs housekeeping duties at pump stations and pumping station site maintenance. Assists in the performance of preventive maintenance on the air filtration systems for major pump stations. Performs wastewater pretreatment maintenance procedures at wastewater pump stations and wet wells. Performs wastewater wet well maintenance on all of the smaller pump stations. Operates an electric truck-mounted hoist and other automotive equipment. Uses or operates basic hand and power tools. Observes and performs personal sanitation procedures daily to prevent contraction of wastewater born infections or blood borne pathogens. Uses special electrical test equipment when required. Performs related tasks as required. Required Education and Experience Required Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 6 months to 2 years experience in mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance and repair. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Grade II Collections license preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; general knowledge of mechanics and electrical theory; general knowledge of OSHA requirements for confined space entry; general knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures; general knowledge of standard electrical test equipment; skill in the use of specialized equipment and hand tools to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to lift heavy articles; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
