Description Benefits Questions General Information & ResponsibilitiesThe Lead Veterinarian provides oversight of the veterinary technology and veterinary assisting programs for the college and establishes, implements, and ensures adherence to all applicable guidelines, regulations, and policies required to maintain program accreditation. The lead veterinarian works collaboratively with the program director and supports staff to ensure the welfare and safety of all animals in the program.Description of Duties Oversight of canine and feline animal health, welfare, and biosecurity programs. Establishes and provides medical treatment plans. Ensures efficient medical and surgical management, comfort, and safety of programming animals Assesses and maintains confidential patient records. Ability to work on a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the program and ensure proper animal care. Compliance with IACUC paperwork, protocols, and meeting requirements Fulfillment of all USDA paperwork and inspections Performs classroom (didactic and clinical, including off-site) teaching as assigned. Delivers effective instruction and uses job-related technology to deliver cutting-edge lecture, laboratory, and clinical material to students. Engages students and provides constructive student feedback. Provides proactive student outreach. Facilitates the students’ ongoing progress and completion of their skills, tasks, and workbooks. Serves as a role model with TEACH values (teamwork, energy, accountability, community, and heart). Curriculum writing to provide a foundation in veterinary technology that will prepare the student to successfully become credentialed and inspire the student to continue lifelong learning. Engages in campus community events and governance Maintains a valid driver’s license for job-related travel. Supporting student learning by providing access to animals is necessary to achieve required clinical competencies and skill development. Ensuring that all animal care and clinical activities comply with AVMA, CVTEA, USDA, and IACUC standards and regulations. Participating in the development, implementation, and evaluation of animal care protocols and clinical procedures. Promoting best practices in patient care, anesthesia, analgesia, and overall animal welfare. Collaborating with program staff to maintain accurate documentation and support quality assurance and regulatory compliance. Education & Experience Degree from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine. Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience preferred. Current and active Federal DEA controlled substance license and Illinois controlled substance license required or able to obtain within 90 days of employment. Proficiency in small animal anesthesia, surgery and pain management. Ability to develop IACUC protocols. Excellent presentation and communication skills. Excellent organizational skills. Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office software. Evidence of professional growth. Valid driver’s license. Ability to lift 40 pounds regularly. Supplemental Information Works directly with the Program Director and Department Chair(s). Works cooperatively with Veterinary Technology and Veterinary Assisting staff and faculty. Works cooperatively with accrediting agencies, students, and others.
