Salary: $17.50 Hourly Location : City of Oconomowoc Job Type: Internship Job Number: UTIL2026GISINTERN1 Department: Electric Department Opening Date: 02/25/2026 Closing Date: 3/30/2026 10:00 AM Central Description The GIS Intern position is a great summer opportunity for students or recent grads in geography, planning, environmental science, surveying, engineering, and related fields. You'll gain real-world experience working on utility and infrastructure projects. A good portion of work is spent outdoors and in the field. Hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., with occasional extra time for after-hours or extended fieldwork. Flexible start/end internship dates based on student's school schedule. Examples of DutiesCollaborate on the preparation of detailed maps, engineering drawings, and other graphics for designing and constructing utility related projects. Help manage and update databases for water, electric, and wastewater utilities-crucial for maintaining infrastructure. Work alongside experienced professionals to administer and inspect construction projects, ensuring quality and accuracy. Assist in converting and updating project record drawings to keep data systems reliable and current. Participate in ongoing GPS collection of utility system facilities, improving the mapping and tracking of key assets. Conduct field work data collection in all weather and ground conditions. Perform other duties assigned. Typical QualificationsProspective intern to be an established geography, urban planning, environmental science, land surveying and/or civil engineering student/graduate. Individuals eager to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations and gain professional experience in infrastructure and utilities. Special Requirements: Good driving record. Valid state driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to internship. Must possess and wear composite or steel toe, ankle-high safety footwear while working in the field. Supplemental InformationWorking knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Working knowledge of AutoCAD products (Civil 3D), preferred, not required. Working knowledge of ESRI's ArcGIS Pro product, preferred, not required. Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to conduct inspections in outdoor environments, including all weather conditions for 8 to 12 hours a day.
