About the Role Deck Operations Specialists are key members of the Navy’s revered seamanship team, responsible for a variety of essential functions onboard a ship. They lead daily operations on deck, ensuring proficient maintenance of surfaces and equipment, and engage actively in vital missions, including Anti-Terrorism Operations and Maritime Interdiction boardings. Responsibilities Stand watch in roles such as helmsman, lookout, and as the Deck Operations Specialist of the Watch. Repair, maintain, and organize deck equipment for operations at sea. Act as Search and Rescue swimmers. Oversee security watches while in port and at sea. Utilize sound-powered communication systems effectively. Participate in naval ceremonies and various shipboard activities. Facilitate underway replenishment between vessels at sea. Operate small boats and assist in flight deck and amphibious operations. Take command of tugs, barges, and other small crafts. Supervise deck crews on cleaning, painting, and equipment maintenance. Direct boat crews during landing and rescue missions. Instruct on seamanship and aid with helicopter operations on the flight deck. What to Expect This is a dynamic, physically engaging position that primarily involves outdoor work alongside a collaborative team. Work Environment Throughout a 20-year career, Deck Operations Specialists typically spend about 60 percent of their time with fleet units and 40 percent at shore stations. The work environment is often outdoors and requires teamwork, physical labor, and active participation in various shipboard operations. Training & Advancement Following Recruit Training, Deck Operations Specialists undergo a four-week A School in Great Lakes, IL, where they learn core seamanship principles, safety protocols, watch standing practices, and procedures for underway replenishment. Additional amphibious training may be provided based on future assignments. Promotion opportunities are generally above average in this role. Education Opportunities Earn college credits through the American Council on Education, with degree options available through the United States Naval Community College (USNCC).
