Position Type: Transportation/Bus Driver Date Posted: 1/5/2026 Location: HASD Transportation Department Reports to: Director of Transportation School bus drivers pick up and drop off students along established routes. They may also transport students and faculty to special events, such as field trips or sporting events which may include nights or weekends. School bus drivers are typically employed during the school year (approximately 180 days) working split shifts of mornings and/or afternoons. The bus driver is an extension of the school system. Each driver is considered a public relations agent of the school system and should provide safe, courteous, and reliable service. Qualifications: Driver must have a Wisconsin driver license with an "S" endorsement Have sufficient use of both hands and the foot normally used to operate the foot brake and foot accelerator correctly and efficiently per Wis. Statutes 343.12 Meet the physical/medical standards for a school bus endorsement Ability to read maps and follow written and verbal geographic directions No felony convictions for offenses that will result in disqualification for obtaining an "S" endorsement Drivers must complete a physical examination at the beginning of employment, and as required by the Motor Vehicle Department for renewal of license and each year beyond the age of seventy (70) years. The Board of Education also reserves the right to require a special medical examination at any time Must be able to physically move through the bus and have the manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus Other requirements/standards as described under WI DOT Trans 300.16 - Driver requirements Other requirements/standards as described under WI DOT Trans 112 - Medical standards for driver licensing and general standards for school bus endorsement Abilities, Skills and Knowledge Desired: Must be reliable and responsible Must be able to control all aspects of driving a bus, and know, understand, and obey all traffic rules Must be able to exercise good judgment and remain calm in an emergency situation Must be able to read and understand a map, and operate a two-way radio Be accepting and relate to a variety of students and be able to maintain order Be able to recognize bus mechanical safety hazards Maintain working knowledge of first aid procedures and be ready to administer aid Drivers assigned to special needs routes require the physical stamina and stature to load, unload, and secure wheelchair students, willingness to endure exposure to inclement weather, skill to operate lifts, and knowledge of proper safety requirements of individual wheelchairs Establish and maintain effective work relationships Responsibilities: Drive a school bus on a time schedule (maintaining a consistent schedule so that students/parents can plan accordingly); transporting students to and from their homes to a variety of possible school sites, and on field trips as assigned Oversee the loading and unloading of students, ensuring the physical safety of the students Maintain a safe environment within the bus by enforcing District rules of conduct and responding to emergencies Monitor students with special health problems while on bus; follow written or oral health instructions, report any difficulty following prescribed instructions and procedures, administer first aid, and call for emergency assistance as necessary Follow District rules for transporting students not enrolled on bus Responsible for properly securing students needing special seating Keep bus interior and exterior clean Complete all pre-trip and post-trip inspections (check the condition of a vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment and all other inspection areas to ensure that everything is in working order) Immediately report any bus malfunctions or needed repairs, and deliver the bus to the service garage for all authorized repairs Immediately report any accident to the Director of Transportation and report delays or other traffic and transportation situations Prepare and submit reports that may include student discipline reports, time logs, fuel use, and daily mileage logs Be attentive to traffic and inclement weather conditions Attend meetings, programs, and in-service training as assigned or requested In case of any unforeseen disaster, take full responsibility to evacuate the students and move them to a secure place Follow District policies and procedures related to the transportation program Perform other duties as assigned Performance Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated by Director of Transportation every year Term of Employment: Approximately 9 months Pay rate: $29.78
