Our School Gilman School is a pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade private independent day school for boys. Set on a 57-acre campus in the northern part of Baltimore City, Gilman serves roughly 1,000 students in three divisions. The School has a full-time faculty of nearly 140, and the average class size is 16 students. What You Will Do: The Security Officer is responsible for providing a visible, professional security presence to support the safety and security of the school community. This position requires the officer to be armed and is primarily assigned to patrol the school's athletics facilities, including the main athletics building, fields, tennis courts, parking areas, and other designated locations as needed. The officer works a regular schedule of 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, with the potential for additional hours or overtime as assigned. The Security Officer reports directly to the Director of Safety and Security and collaborates with school administrators, facilities staff, and local emergency responders to help maintain a safe environment for students, staff, families, and visitors in a Pre-K12 setting. Provide a visible, professional armed security presence to promote a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and guests Conduct regular foot patrols of assigned areas, including the main athletics building, tennis courts, back parking lot, maintenance areas as needed, and lower housing areas as assigned. Monitor access points, grounds, and facilities to deter unauthorized entry, vandalism, theft, or other safety concerns. Observe, identify, and promptly report suspicious activity, safety hazards, or policy violations to the Director of Safety and Security and appropriate school personnel. Respond appropriately to incidents, emergencies, alarms, and calls for assistance, following established protocols and procedures. Maintain situational awareness during athletic practices, games, events, and after-school activities, adjusting patrols as needed. Assist with crowd control, traffic flow, and parking management Communicate with the local police department and monitor external threats to the campus community. Carry, maintain, and use assigned security equipment in compliance with all laws, licensing requirements, and school policies. Assists emergency response personnel as needed. Conducts individual building checks and monitors scheduled activities. Patrols campus grounds, buildings, and athletic fields. Regularly perform security checks of all buildings and examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure security. Escorts students, faculty, and service providers. Identifies building maintenance and security needs and reports findings to the Director of Safety and Security. Provides a high degree of visibility while on duty. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: Minimum of five (5) years of relevant security or law enforcement experience. Must possess or be able to obtain Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) certification or Maryland Wear and Carry within 90 days of hire. Must possess or be able to obtain Maryland Security Guard Certification within 90 days of hire. Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, families, and visitors Valid driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle as required for patrol duties Ability to work independently and part of a team; flexibility and sound judgment are essential. Preferred Qualifications: Retired in good standing from an accredited law enforcement agency Prior experience in a school, campus, or youth-centered environment Experience providing security coverage for athletic facilities, events, or large gatherings. Physical Requirements: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time while conducting indoor and outdoor patrols Ability to climb stairs, walk uneven terrain, and navigate facilities, parking lots, and grounds in varying weather conditions. Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as needed. Ability to respond quickly to emergencies, including running, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching as required. Ability to operate security and safety equipment, including radios, surveillance systems, and firearms, in accordance with training and policy Ability to maintain visual and auditory awareness to observe surroundings, detect hazards, and respond to incidents Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in heat, cold, rain, or other environmental conditions Compensation and Benefits We are committed to transparency and supporting our employees' well-being.
