Salary: $17.40 Hourly Location : Del Mar, CA Job Type: Temporary/Seasonal Job Number: 2026-02 Department: Community Services Department Opening Date: 01/27/2026 Closing Date: 3/21/2026 6:59 AM Pacific The Position The Lifeguard Division of the Community Services Department will conduct a mandatory performance test and interview process on Saturday, March 21, 2026, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Beach Safety Center 1700 Coast Blvd, Del Mar, CA 92014. All applicants must submit an application and sign a participation waiver prior to testing. Interested candidates should review the detailed information about the tryouts and required Lifeguard Academy in the supplemental information section of this posting. The Desired Minimum Qualifications The minimum qualifications are listed below, please refer to the class specifications for full position requirements and details. Minimum Qualifications: 16 years of age by June 1, 2026. Ability to pass a performance test that includes a 200m-800m-200m Run-Swim-Run; 800 meter paddleboard race; and 800 meter run. Strong ocean knowledge Customer service skills Mandatory attendance at an 100-hour Lifeguard Academy (More information below) Supplemental Information Performance Test Information The Lifeguard Division of the Community Services Department will conduct a mandatory performance test and interview process on March 21, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. The testing will be held at 1700 Coast Blvd, Del Mar at the Beach Safety Center. In order to participate in the testing/interview process, you must have submitted an employment application and waiver prior to the start of the testing. Here is a link to the waiver on the City's website: Waivers may be submitted via email to or in-person at the Beach Safety Center on March 21st, 2026. The performance test will include a 200m-800m-200m Run-Swim-Run; 800 meter paddleboard race; and 800 meter run. Candidates that pass the performance test will be invited to stay and participate in an interview process. What to bring on test day: 1. warm clothes 2. swimsuit 3. wetsuit (if desired) 4. towel 5. clothes for the oral interview 6. Identification to verify age No fins or other swimming aids will be allowed to be worn during the physical agility or swim test. Other testing methods may be used if deemed necessary. Volunteer Workouts Information Volunteer (optional) workouts will be held on: March 1, 7, & 14 10:00am-11:30am at the Del Mar Beach Safety Center, located at 1700 Coast Blvd. Lifeguard Academy Information: The Academy will take place over the course of six (6) weekends (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) beginning on May 1, 2026. Friday classes will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday classes will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Class dates are May 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, Monday 25, 29, 30, 31. This mandatory academy totals 100+ hours. Academy curriculum will include Emergency Responder First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and all lifeguard training. Pre-Employment Screening Post-employment offer, candidates will be required to pass a Department of Justice Live Scan finger printing and a pre-employment physical to ensure the candidate meets United States Lifeguard Association Health and Fitness standards and the physical requirements of the Student Lifeguard position. USLA Health & Fitness Standards include adequate vision, hearing acuity, physical ability and stamina to perform the duties of an open water lifeguard as documented by a medical doctor, or the doctor's designated physician's assistant. Compensation Probationary/Regular part-time employees shall be paid the hourly equivalent of the monthly salary paid to a full-time employee in the classification to which they are assigned or paid according to the approved salary schedule for Miscellaneous, Part-Time, Temporary and Hourly Employees. Employees shall move through Steps A-E in their range at the discretion of the Department Head and with City Manager's approval and must have completed a minimum of one year of paid time at each previous Step and demonstrated satisfactory performance. Part-Time, Seasonal, Temporary positions are limited to 1,000 hours per fiscal year. The City of Del Mar provides only limited benefits for temporary employees. These benefits include the City's retirement contributions of 1.45% to Medicare and 1.3% to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS), an alternate retirement system. Employee contributions of 1.45% to Medicare and 6.2% to PARS are required for these benefits and will be deducted from employees' paychecks. Additionally, in accordance with State law, employees are provided forty (40) hours of sick leave annually based on their anniversary date with a 90-day waiting period before becoming eligible to use sick leave. Employees in these positions will receive one and a half times (1.5x) their normal hourly rate for all hours worked on all designated City holidays.
