Job Description The Texas General Land Office is seeking a Principal Data Analyst (Data Analyst VI) within the Information Technology Services Department of the agency. Data Analyst VI: Performs advanced (senior-level) data analysis and data research work with agency-wide scope and impact. This position serves as a senior technical authority responsible for ensuring data integrity, analytical quality, governance alignment, and readiness of data for modern and emerging analytical use cases. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Influences agency-wide analytical practices and data stewardship through technical authority, consultation, and standards stewardship rather than people management. Work involves leading the most complex and high-risk analytical efforts, establishing expectations for analytical quality, metadata, and compliance, supporting data governance and retention practices, and translating complex data into insights that support executive-level planning and strategic decisions. The position provides agency-level technical leadership for data analytics by driving complex analytical efforts, supporting analysts and external partners, and ensuring analytical practices aligning with established standards, governance expectations, and strategic objectives. While this role retains hands-on involvement, work is focused on the most complex, novel, or mission-critical analytical challenges rather than routine analysis. About the Role• The Principal Data Analyst plays a vital role in advancing enterprise-level analytics and data governance across the Texas General Land Office. Serving as a senior technical authority, this position leads to the most complex and high-impact analytical initiatives, ensuring data integrity, methodological consistency, and executive-ready insights that support strategic decision-making. • This role strengthens the agency's analytical maturity by establishing standards for data quality, metadata, documentation, and governance alignment. The Principal Data Analyst partners closely with business leaders, analysts, engineers, and product teams to translate complex data into reliable, defensible insights while ensuring compliance with regulatory and retention requirements. • Operating as a hands-on senior contributor, the Principal Data Analyst serves as a subject-matter expert in advanced SQL-based analysis, enterprise reporting, and best analytical practices. The individual in this role demonstrates strong analytical judgment, attention to data integrity, and a commitment to delivering trustworthy insights that inform policy, planning, and operational outcomes across the agency. What Your Contributions to the GLO Will be: • Enterprise-Impact Data Analysis & Execution - Performs and guides hands-on analysis for the most complex, novel, or mission-critical analytical initiatives with agency-wide impact, providing technical directions to analysts and partners involved in the work. • Analytical Quality, Metadata & Methodology Leadership - Defines and enforces analytical quality practices, Metadata expectations, and methodological consistency across complex analyses, providing technical leadership and guidance to ensure trust and reusability of data. • Advanced Insight Development & Strategic Support - Translates complex analytical findings into high-confidence insights that support executive-level planning, risk assessment, and strategic decision-making. • Data Integrity, Governance & Compliance Oversight - Serves as a technical authority on data integrity, classification, retention considerations, and compliance requirements, guiding resolution of systemic or high-risk data issues. • Modern Data Enablement & Advanced Analytics Support - Guides the use of standardized, well-governed data to support advanced and emerging analytical approaches, coordinating with engineering teams and vendors without owning platforms or pipelines. • Senior Consultation, Standards Stewardship & Documentation - Provides authoritative consultation, stewards analytical and data standards, supports enterprise data cataloging efforts, and maintains enterprise-level analytical documentation. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:• Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, or a related field. • Equivalent professional experience may substitute for the degree requirement at a rate of one year of relevant experience for each year of education. Preferred Qualifications: • Extensive experience performing complex enterprise data analysis with agency-wide or organizational impact. • Advanced proficiency in SQL for querying, transforming, validating, and analyzing structured enterprise datasets. • Experience developing executive-level reports, dashboards, and analytical deliverables using enterprise business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI or comparable platforms). • Demonstrated experience leading high-risk or executive-facing analytical initiatives that inform strategic planning, risk assessment, or operational optimization. • Experience applying statistical methods, trend analysis, forecasting techniques, or other advanced analytical approaches to large-scale datasets. • Experience defining analytical standards, documentation practices, and metadata expectations to ensure consistency and reproducibility of analytical outputs. • Experience supporting enterprise data governance initiatives, including data integrity validation, classification considerations, and retention alignment. • Experience working within regulatory or compliance-driven environments where analytical defensibility and data accuracy are critical. • Relevant certifications in analytics, business intelligence, or data management are strongly preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: • Advanced SQL-based data analysis and relational database concepts. • Enterprise reporting and business intelligence platforms (e.g., Power BI or comparable tools). • Advanced analytical methodologies, statistical techniques, and data interpretation strategies. • Data governance principles, including data integrity, classification, metadata, and retention requirements. • Data quality assurance practices that support analytical trust and reproducibility. • Regulatory and compliance considerations related to enterprise reporting and analytics. Skill in: • Writing and optimizing complex SQL queries across large enterprise datasets. • Design and developing executive-ready analytical dashboards and reports. • Translating complex analytical findings into clear, defensible, and actionable insights. • Evaluating and improving data quality within reporting and analytical workflows. • Communicating analytical results effectively to technical, operational, and executive stakeholders. • Identifying systemic data risks and recommending governance-aligned solutions. Ability to: • Serve as a senior technical authority for enterprise data analysis and methodological standards. • Exercise independent judgment in ambiguous, high-impact analytical scenarios. • Influence agency-wide analytical practices through standards stewardship and technical consultation. • Guide complex analytical efforts without formal supervisory authority. • Balance analytical innovation with governance, compliance, and data integrity requirements. • Elevate analytical maturity, consistency, and data stewardship practices across teams. Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work; however, mobility (moving around the worksite) is routinely required to carry out some duties. This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/ customer contact and communication. It requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions. Ability to read printed materials and computer screens. The individual must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required. Location Requirements: • This position is based in Austin, TX. Candidates must be currently located in the Austin area or willing to relocate at their own expense.
