Job Responsibilities Under the leadership of the Lead Teacher/Educator and serves as a Social Studies Teacher for the SC National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Academy. Responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program that will result in students achieving academic success in accordance with Youth ChalleNGe Academy policies. Responsible for developing a curriculum and providing educational instruction in the subject matter assigned. Teaches courses in social studies, history, geography, American government, political science, or humanities to secondary pupils, utilizing core curriculum and other appropriate learning activities approved by the Board of Education and in line with the GED curriculum guide. Instructs pupils in citizenship and essential subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Develops a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, materials on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage pupils to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships, and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry. Provides individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds. Plan lessons, assign and grade work, lead classroom activities. Develops knowledge of the purpose, structure, and operation of the American governmental and economic system, and the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. Makes current material from the mass media available to pupils; plans and guides discussions of current problems against the background of geographical environment and history of the area being studied. Develops an understanding of the contributions of racial, religious, and political groups to American culture. Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students. Incorporates experiential learning teaching methods. Maintains accurate, complete and up-to-date records of attendance, and test scores/grades. Assesses the accomplishments of the cadets on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum and Additional Requirements A Bachelor's Degree with a major in the subject area to be taught and necessary education courses required to teach in South Carolina; or a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary or Secondary Education. Experience working with high school students in an educational setting is desirable. Preferred Qualifications A Master's Degree with a major in History or related field. Teacher's certification.
