POSITION SUMMARY: Surgical technologists are members of the operating room team who assist in surgical operations under the supervision of the surgeons and registered nurses.  The technologists provides and assists in the care, maintenance, disinfection and sterilization of instrument trays, performs surgical scrub assistance and performs activities relating to other processing of supplies and equipment in Central Supply and the O.R.  Prepares the O.R. by setting up surgical instruments, supplies, solutions and equipment.  Checks these items to assure proper functioning.  Assists in transporting and positioning patients.  During surgery the surgical technologist pass instruments and other supplies to the surgeon and assistant.  They may cut sutures, hold retractors under the direction of the surgeon.  Helps with the instrument and sponge and sharp counts.  Helps with the care of specimens.  Assists with applying the dressing.  Maintains a professional profile.   Promotes cooperation, a positive attitude and assists in creating a safe environment for both patients and staff.  Responsible for knowing and adhering to established hospital policies and procedures, including all aspects of safety. RESPONSIBILITES: Cares for the surgical patient in surgical operating room setting.  Assembles equipment, supplies, sutures and instruments for each assigned surgical procedure.  Scrubs on the basic level procedures for all specialty services and on complex surgical procedure ensuring maintenance of the surgical field.  Assists in cleaning, restocking and reconfiguring the operating room between procedures and at the completion of the schedules.  Tests operational efficiency of equipment and reports problems to the Clinician or nurse manager.  Assists in restocking storage and equipment supply areas. Attends in-service programs.  Involved in recommendations to improve job performance and enhance patient care.  Communicates instrumentation needs to CSS.  Assists in preparation of equipment for special procedures.  Reports/documents appropriate patient care information.  REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma.  Completion of a program for Surgical Technology from a nationally accredited educational program.  Surgical Technician certification (or equivalent experience /Current staff).  Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association required.  On Call required.  Summer in-house weekend and holidays rotation required.  PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Recent surgical technologist experience.  Strong orthopedic and ophthalmology scrub experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, walking 90% of the time.   Lifting patients with assistance.  Pushing heavy objects.  As part of employment at Southampton Hospital, there may be occasions when travel to other locations is needed to support operational needs. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBSH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
