The Land Conservation Intern will work directly with Charles Yeager, the Director of Land and Water Conservation for the Jefferson County Greenways. Interns will gain hands-on experience and knowledge in land stewardship and conservation methodologies. About Jefferson County Greenways Jefferson County Greenways (JCG) is a dynamic public-private partnership dedicated to preserving three of the region's treasured natural areas: Red Mountain Park, Ruffner Mountain, and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve. JCG's mission is to preserve and care for these greenspaces as sanctuaries for our neighbors, native plants, and animals.These beloved spaces exist today thanks to the tireless efforts and unwavering support of our local community members. Today, we continue that legacy by managing and maintaining these vital areas through a strong partnership between the Jefferson County Greenways Commission and the Jefferson County Greenways Foundation. Description2026 Land Conservation InternshipOrganization: Jefferson County Greenways Eligibility: Must be a current college student or recent graduate (within one year) pursuing/with a degree in biology, ecology, environmental sciences, environmental resource management, forestry, or related field.Special priority will be given to students attending college in Alabama or students from Alabama. Dates: 160 hours total over eight weeks, June - July, M-F with some weekends, hours and dates flexible Payment: $2,500 total stipend, paid monthly in two installments of $1,250 Housing may be available upon request. Applicants are responsible for their own transportation. Position Summary: The Land Conservation Intern will work directly with Charles Yeager, the Director of Land and Water Conservation for Jefferson County Greenways. Interns will gain hands-on experience and knowledge in land stewardship and conservation methodologies. Primary responsibilities will include: Assist with stewardship and land management activities such as invasive species remediation, revegetation, native plant propagation, erosion control, and water quality monitoring. Support conservation team with monitoring, assessment and data collection towards the development of comprehensive conservation plans. Assist with GIS mapping and tracking of land management activities. Interns are also provided with unique opportunities to: Learn about Alabama's unique biological diversity and the challenges we face preserving it. Learn various land management techniques. Work and network with other environmental nonprofits, governmental agencies, community groups, and volunteers. Develop a guided independent project that is impactful. Essential Skills and Qualifications: Currently enrolled, rising Junior or Senior undergraduate, or recent graduate in good academic standing. Good communication skills and punctuality. High attention to detail, can follow and remember directions, and a good problem-solver. Willing to work outdoors in summer conditions, which may include: biting insects, summer heat, navigating steep terrain on foot, and physical labor. Can lift up to 25 pounds, bend, walk, stoop, climb, lift, crawl, push, pull, and stand for long periods of time with reasonable accommodations. Experience with (or willingness to learn) using hand tools such as axes, pruners, loppers, shovels, etc. Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) native flora and fauna of Central Alabama. Prefer previous experience with Google Suite/Microsoft Office and GoogleMaps Experience with ArcGIS is a plus. How to Apply: To apply, click the link and submit answers via the online portal.
