Planning Software Engineer II (Project Based)This is a project-based employee role supporting the development and evolution of ASI's autonomous vehicle planning platforms. We operate according to our core values: Safe, Simple, Transparent, Growth, Humble, and Attention to Detail.About the RoleWe are hiring a Planning Software Engineer II/III to focus on designing, developing, testing, and maintaining core planning software that enables autonomous vehicle behavior across multiple ASI markets, including agriculture, landscaping, and construction, with an initial focus on agricultural area coverage planning. This role works on geometry- and algorithm-heavy problems related to path planning, coverage strategies, and vehicle intelligence, ensuring solutions remain robust and compatible across shared platforms. Engineers collaborate closely with a Technical Lead and cross-functional teams, with scope expanding by level from feature implementation to greater ownership of technical decisions, architectural contributions, and cross-market impact. This is a hybrid role based in Logan, Utah, with three days onsite and two days remote; candidates must reside in Utah and be able to travel to Logan as needed.Job DutiesPlanning & Algorithm Development Design, develop, and maintain area coverage planning and path planning algorithmsImplement geometry- and map-based algorithms, including spatial reasoning, intersection checking, and coverage strategiesEnsure planning solutions remain compatible across multiple vehicle platforms and marketsContribute to shared planning libraries used by agriculture, landscaping, and construction teams Software Development & Quality Develop high-quality software primarily in C++, with some Python usageWrite clear, maintainable, and well-documented codeDebug, troubleshoot, profile, and optimize existing planning systemsWrite unit tests and support integration and system testingParticipate in code reviews, design reviews, and technical discussions Collaboration & Execution Work closely with planning, robotics, systems, and field teamsAdapt priorities based on development peaks, field testing cycles, and release needsSupport planning-related work across markets when requiredApply Agile/Scrum development practices Experience & Qualifications by LevelPlanning Software Engineer I 0-2 years of software engineering experience or equivalent academic/project experienceBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fieldExposure to algorithm development and basic data structuresFamiliarity with C++, Python, or similar programming languagesFoundational understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and linear algebraAbility to learn existing codebases and follow established engineering practices Planning Software Engineer II 2-4 years of professional software engineering experienceExperience implementing algorithms in C++ or PythonWorking knowledge of geometry-based or spatial algorithmsAbility to work independently on moderately scoped tasksFamiliarity with unit testing, version control, and Agile developmentExperience with ROS or ROS2 preferred Planning Software Engineer III 4-7 years of professional software engineering experienceStrong proficiency in C++, with solid algorithm design skillsExperience developing or maintaining planning, coverage, or motion algorithmsStrong understanding of geometry, linear algebra, and algorithm complexityAbility to independently deliver moderately complex featuresExperience working in shared codebases where changes affect multiple systemsROS/ROS2 experience preferred Planning Software Engineer IV 7+ years of professional software engineering experienceDeep expertise in planning algorithms, geometry-heavy systems, or autonomous navigationExperience leading technical design and contributing to system architectureStrong understanding of performance optimization, memory management, and multi-threadingAbility to mentor junior engineers and lead technical discussionsExperience ensuring system robustness across multiple products or markets Planning Software Engineer V 10+ years of professional software engineering experienceRecognized technical expert in planning, autonomy, or algorithmic systemsProven experience owning or architecting large, shared software platformsStrong system-level thinking with a company-wide impact mindsetAbility to guide long-term technical direction and influence engineering standardsExperience mentoring senior engineers and leading complex technical initiatives Preferred Qualifications Experience with area coverage planning, path planning, or motion planningBackground working with maps, spatial data, collision checking, or coverage algorithmsExperience with ROS/ROS2-based systemsExposure to sensor-driven planning systemsFamiliarity with Agile/Scrum development methodologies BenefitsASI offers a competitive benefits package, including: 401K Retirement PlanPTO and Holiday PayMedical, Dental, Vision PlansLife Insurance OptionsShort-term and Long-term Disability Plans EEO StatementAt Autonomous Solutions, Inc.
