GAI Consultants, Inc. is on the lookout for a seasoned Grid Modernization Engineering Manager to spearhead our initiatives in expanding GAI's services related to microgrid, distributed energy resources (DERs), and renewable + storage projects from the groundwork to execution. This role reports to the Business Sector Leader of the Power and Industry Business Sector within GAI's Power Business Unit. The successful candidate will have a solid foundation in a variety of renewable or islanded technologies, lead technical delivery efforts, and actively support business development efforts associated with these technologies. Key Responsibilities Include: Perform technical tasks such as engineering design, conducting drawing reviews, assessment evaluations, and generating reports. Provide effective engineering methodologies, guidance, and serve as a key resource for engineers and designers. Conduct technical assessments and offer recommendations for equipment selection based on circuit configurations and functionalities. Contribute to the business plan from a technical viewpoint by writing white papers, participating in technical committee groups, and acting as a technical liaison during client interactions. Oversee project management responsibilities, ensuring the successful delivery of project scope, timetable, budget, quality, safety, and profitability. Manage small to medium-scale projects while coordinating with Project Accounting to ensure budget alignment and performance analysis. Coordinate all pre-contract efforts within the division, including go/no-go decisions, strategy development, proposed scope, schedule, and fee assessments. Supervise technical staff both directly and indirectly within the division. Maintain effective communication with the Business Sector Leader to address issues and share resources, workloads, and marketing opportunities. Collaborate with other Business Sector managers/division leaders to ensure the delivery of profitable, safety-oriented, and sustainable projects and services for clients. Travel to various offices, meet with clients, and attend project-specific gatherings as necessary. Wear and utilize Personal Protection Equipment as needed for field activities. Work independently while overseeing engineering and design staff on a project basis. Exhibit strong communication skills to foster a collaborative environment with other engineering disciplines. Implement project scopes, schedules, budgets, quality standards, safety measures, and profitability goals for managed projects. Plan and manage medium to high-value projects, focusing on single or multi-discipline engagements with varying risk profiles. Oversee project billing up to $1 million annually, managing multiple projects simultaneously. Develop project schedules and budget estimates while understanding project goals and drivers. Collaborate closely with Project Controls personnel to monitor and adjust project costs and billing, ensuring revenue targets are met and analyzing performance data continuously. Grow new business from existing clients by fostering relationships, identifying future opportunities, and maintaining regular communication. Coordinate project scope, scheduling, and fee development for comprehensive project proposals and participate in interview panels. Assist senior management during contract negotiations with clients. Physical Requirements: Ability to work in professional office settings. Prolonged sitting while performing computer-related tasks. Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and handling equipment. Visual acuity to read printed materials, screens, and detailed documents. Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching within an office environment; ability to move between workstations and attend in-person meetings. Ability to lift and carry office materials or equipment weighing between 10-20 pounds, with or without assistance. Good hearing to engage in conversations, phone calls, and virtual meetings. Travel for meetings, training, or business purposes as required. General Characteristics: Possesses thorough knowledge of current engineering principles and practices. Utilizes acquired expertise to resolve significant issues and unique challenges. Stays informed of new methodologies and developments, recommending changes in project approaches when necessary. Leads projects of moderate complexity or oversees major projects. Analyzes complex problems relevant to engineering disciplines. Addresses ethical dilemmas and determines proper actions. Minimum Experience Required: A minimum of twelve (12) years of experience. At least 10 years of direct technical experience with microgrids / DERs covering all phases from feasibility to implementation. Candidates with less experience may still be considered based on relevant project experience. Demonstrated success in engineering or project management with the ability to manage multiple complex projects concurrently. Solid mastery of fundamental project management skills and advanced techniques for improving productivity and efficiency. Subject matter expert in microgrids / DERs with comprehensive knowledge of engineering concepts and principles. Proficient in relevant software tools including Microsoft Office Suite, CAD programs, document management systems, and database software. Preferred Experience: Familiarity with microgrid-specific software such as Homer or AspenTech. Experience with renewable energy, battery storage systems, fuel cells, or hydrogen technologies. Knowledge in system modeling and circuit optimization maintenance. Client development experience is advantageous. Education: B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related field is preferred. Licenses and Certifications: Professional Engineer (P.E.) License with reciprocity in multiple states. Valid Driver's License. Technical Responsibilities: Acts as a technical advisor, applying advanced concepts and methodologies to relevant application areas. Stays updated on new developments and requirements to recommend necessary project adjustments. Implements improved techniques, processes, or materials in project delivery. Evaluates sustainable performance of complex engineering projects through a systems perspective. Project and Task Management: Plans, schedules, and coordinates document preparation for multiple major projects or oversees a complete project target to a specific practice. Reviews project management plans to ensure comprehensive handling of complex engineering initiatives. Applies risk management principles to address uncertainties, ensuring compliance with policies and performance standards. May act as Project Manager for designated projects with prior authorization from GAI's President for projects up to $50,000 annually. Management Responsibility: Supervises a team of engineers and technicians. Operates with broad objectives and guidelines, managing assignments effectively. Provides mentorship and continued professional development for senior staff. Encourages professionalism, creativity, flexibility, and reliability among team members. Communication Skills: Employs strategic communication principles effectively in various contexts. Represents specialty areas within the organization, liaising with team leaders and clients.
