About the Role: We are a passionate group of engineers dedicated to tackling intricate distributed systems and infrastructure challenges. Our mission is to build Kora from the ground up, creating a managed service that meets the highest standards of availability and performance while minimizing ownership costs. What You Will Do: Storage Engine Development: Design and implement a highly available, performant, durable, scalable, and multi-tenant storage engine for Kora. Engineering Leadership: Lead by example, driving technical solutions from conception to implementation while working closely with the team and stakeholders for top-tier results. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work alongside product management, design, and other engineering teams to ensure integrated storage features and infrastructure. Serve as a trusted advisor to internal and cross-functional teams, guiding complex technical challenges and contributing to strategic decisions. Mentoring: Support junior engineers by providing mentorship and helping to shape the team's direction. What You Will Bring: 12+ years of experience in backend and/or infrastructure development. A degree (BS, MS, or PhD) in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience. Expertise in Java, Scala, C/C++, Go, or other statically typed languages. Experience in designing and building large-scale, distributed storage systems. Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts including fault tolerance, consistency, and scalability. Solid systems-level understanding (disk, network, operating systems, etc.). Proven leadership abilities with experience mentoring engineers. Strong communication and collaboration skills to influence and guide stakeholders. What Gives You an Edge: A robust background in distributed storage systems or databases. Experience in developing and operating modern cloud-based infrastructure in multi-tenant settings. Experience with SaaS services on public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). Familiarity with open-source technologies such as Apache Kafka, Apache Iceberg, or Apache Flink. A passion for knowledge sharing, such as speaking at tech conferences or writing technical articles.
