Salary: $25.34 Hourly Location : Waukegan, IL Job Type: Temporary Remote Employment: Remote Only Job Number: 16271 Department: Health Department Division: Business Operations Opening Date: 03/04/2026 Salary Grade: Hourly.5 Pay Grade: 5 General Description The Marketing Communications Specialist is a a valuable member of our Health Department team who assists the Marketing and Communications Manager in conducting a comprehensive marketing and communications program for the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center. This person's main responsibilities are internal communications, social media, and assisting in the production of marketing materials. Additional responsibilities include organizing outreach activities, developing messaging to increase public awareness of health issues and Health Department services, and executing risk communications in the event of public health threats and emergencies. Scheduled Hours: 37.5 hours per week This position is temporary, with an estimated duration from April to early August; this timeframe is subject to change. Essential FunctionsCollaborates with Health Department programs to develop and implement internal and external communication plans, with a focus on innovative approaches to content delivery. Develops content for internal email newsletters, employee screensavers, and manager talking points. Develops social media content for the Health Department's Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and NextDoor, and other platforms. Responds to public inquiries via phone, email, and social media messages. Assists in the creation of professional brochures, flyers, infographics and other marketing materials to promote health department programs. Develops messages to raise awareness of health issues to promote public health. Takes photos of Health Department activities and maintains photo files. Takes the lead in organizing community outreach events; assists Health Department programs with their event coordination and communications. Updates content on the Health Department's website, social media accounts, intranet site and digital signs. Responds to external requests for community event participation and occasional requests for information from the media. Assists with disseminating risk communication and public information regarding preparedness, exposure risks and response to public health threats and emergencies. Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education RequiredBachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations or a related field (preferred) or a minimum of 2 years related experience. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required. Must be able to maintain effective professional relationships with staff and non-agency contacts. Must be flexible and capable of fulfilling last minute requests from media and staff.
