Job Description

Theprimary purpose of the RN Unit Manager position is to supervise the clinicalapplications and facility operations on a 24/7 basis for an assigned unit inthe facility. • Assistthe Director of Nursing (or designee) and facility administrator in directingthe day-to-day functions of the facility's nursing services and other areas offacility operations, as assigned. • Participatein developing, maintaining and updating written policies and procedures thatgovern day-to-day functions of the nursing department. • Ensurethat a copy of the Nursing Policies & Procedures Manual is available ateach nursing station, is current and reflects the day-to-day nursing proceduresperformed at this facility. • Ensurethat all nursing service personnel comply with the procedures set forth in theNursing Policies & Procedures Manual. • Makewritten and oral reports/recommendations to the DON or designee concerningoperation of the assigned unit. • Assistin developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other residentservices to ensure the continuity of the residents' plans of care. • Participatein the development, implementation and evaluation of the facility's QualityAssurance Performance Improvement program. • Participatein facility surveys made by authorized government agencies as requested. • Reviewthe resident's written discharge plan. Participate in the updating of theresident's written discharge plan as required. • Meetwith the nursing staff, and other departmental representatives, to plan andcoordinate departmental and facility-wide services, programs and activities. • Assistwith the admission, transfer, and discharge residents as required. • Respondto reports of resident, employee and/or visitor accidents, incidents or unusualcircumstances. Ensure that appropriatedocumentation is made and that the initial investigation is completed andreported to appropriate persons. • Interpretdepartment and facility policies and procedures to personnel, residents,visitors, and government personnel as required. • Makedaily rounds of the unit to ensure that all nursing personnel are performingtheir work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards ofpractice and in accordance with all federal and state licensure regulations. • Performother administrative duties as requested by the DON or designee. • Reviewand validate unit staffing to ensure adequate coverage to meet resident needs. Committee Functions • Participateactively in various committee meetings of the department and/or facility asrequested by the DON or designee. • Communicateand assist with implementation of recommendations from established committees. Human Resource Functions • Ensurethat a sufficient number of qualified RNs, LPNs and CNAs are available toensure quality care is delivered. • Developor assist in the development of work assignments for nursing service personnel. • Assistin meeting staffing needs for other facility departments, as requested by thefacility administrator or department heads. • Participatein the Orientation program for new associates and provide oversight tocompetency. • Delegateto each Charge Nurse the authority, responsibility and accountability necessaryto perform his or her assigned duties. • Assistthe Nurse Educator in developing and presenting in-service programs. Ensure that these programs meet thecontinuing education requirements necessary for continued licensure andcertification. • Monitorabsenteeism based on absentee reports for individual associates. • Reviewcomplaints and grievances made by department personnel. • Developand maintain a good working rapport with other departments to ensure thatnursing services are coordinated with other resident services with the goal ofmeeting the residents' needs. • Meetwith your shift on a regularly scheduled basis to assist in identifying andcorrecting problem areas and to assist in the improvement of services. • Reviewand evaluate nursing service staffing patterns and make recommendations to theDON or designee for revisions, as appropriate. • Participatein associate performance evaluations as requested. • Ensurethat departmental disciplinary action is administered fairly and in compliancewith established disciplinary procedures. • Createand maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis,as well as a calm, quiet environment throughout the facility • Reportoccupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, andhazardous chemicals in accordance with the facility's policies and procedures. Nursing Care Functions • Implementand maintain established facility objectives, consistent with federal and statelicensure regulations and nursing standards of practice. • Follow the facility's policies and proceduresgoverning the provision of direct care to residents, including theadministration of medications, treatments and other care in accordance withphysicians' orders and the residents' care plans. • Encourageattending physicians to sign progress notes, physician's orders, etc. on atimely basis and according to regulations. • Informthe DON or designee when physician visits are not made in a timely manner. • Consultwith the resident, his or her family, the resident's physician and othermembers of the interdisciplinary care team in planning the resident's care,treatment, rehabilitation, etc. • Visitresidents on a regular basis in order to observe and evaluate each resident'sphysical, mental, cognitive, psychosocial and emotional status and notify theresident's attending physician and responsible party when there is asignificant change in a resident's condition. • Reviewnurses' notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of thenursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident's response to thecare, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident's wishes. • Providedirect nursing care support to nurses and CNTs, as appropriate. • Reportproblem areas to the DON or designee and assist in developing correctiveaction. • Keepthe DON or designee informed of the status of residents and other relatedmatters through written/oral reports and telephone reports as needed. • Monitorseriously ill and/or residents with complex needs to ensure needs are met. • Ensurethat all RNs and LPNs on your shift comply with written procedures for theadministration, storage, and control of medications and supplies. • Monitormedication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are beingadministered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled andMedselect utilized appropriately. • Reviewmedication orders for completeness of information, accuracy in thetranscription of physician orders, and adherence to stop order policies. Auditmissing documentation reports daily and coordinate corrections as needed. • Inspect the treatment carts and medicationcarts/rooms on at least a weekly basis to ensure that they are maintained in aclean, safe and appropriately stocked condition. • Meetwith residents, and/or family members, as necessary.
