Essential Job Duties This position plays a vital role in delivering exceptional patient care and care coordination within the Ophthalmology Service at both the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center and the Equine and Farm Animal Center. As part of a fast-paced, teaching-hospital environment, you will contribute to leading-edge specialty medicine while working alongside clinicians, students, and a varied veterinary healthcare team. The ideal candidate brings strong veterinary medical knowledge, excellent organizational skills, and clear, compassionate communication. This role offers the opportunity to support advanced diagnostics and treatments, engage directly with clients and referring veterinarians, and ensure seamless coordination of care across services. Specialty Patient Care & Treatment SupportProvide comprehensive direct patient care for both small and large animal patients. This includes supporting diagnostic, therapeutic, and procedural treatments; monitoring patients; administering medications and therapies; assisting with post-procedure recovery and pain management; and ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout every stage of care. Procedural, Diagnostic & Technical SupportPrepare and assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using aseptic technique; maintain sterile work areas; operate and maintain specialized ophthalmic and hospital equipment; and coordinate advanced imaging such as CT, MRI, ultrasound, radiography, and surgical support. Client, rDVM & Interdisciplinary CommunicationSupport client check-in and patient admitting, provide timely updates, assist with scheduling, and maintain clear and professional communication with referring veterinarians, clinicians, staff, and other hospital teams to enhance patient outcomes and client satisfaction. Workflow, Documentation & Financial CoordinationCoordinate patient visits, diagnostic and procedural requests, medication and sample submissions, and contribute to accurate billing, estimates, and charge entry. Ensure thorough and timely documentation of all patient care and communications within hospital information systems. Education, Compliance & Operational SupportHelp orient and train staff and learners; maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized workspace; ensure equipment readiness and adequate supply levels; and comply with infectious disease protocols, OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety requirements. Essential Job Duties Accurately calculate and administer medications, IV fluids, and pain-management therapies. Maintain detailed patient records, adhere to infection control and safety protocols, and assist in mentoring students and interns. Safely lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations. Other Responsibilities Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Experience/Education Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting, preferably at a teaching hospital. Demonstrated ability to calculate and administer medications, IV fluids, and pain-management therapies, and to monitor patients through treatment and recovery. Experience assisting with sterile diagnostic or surgical procedures and operating or maintaining specialized medical or ophthalmic equipment. Proficiency in coordinating patient scheduling, documentation, and billing processes within a hospital information system. Strong communication and organizational skills, with experience collaborating with clients, referring veterinarians, interdisciplinary teams, and learners while maintaining compliance with established safety and infection control protocols. Required License or Certification Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state. Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program.
