The CT Technologist performs specialized technical duties that require the ability to set up computed tomography equipment. They position patients and acquire cross-sectional diagnostic images of internal body structures for the detection, diagnosis, and evaluation of pathology. The role includes providing computed tomography service coverage after normal business hours, on weekends, and holidays. The technologist performs computed tomography procedures on a variety of patients, including scheduled exams, inpatients, outpatients, and emergency department patients. Job responsibilities include producing high-quality radiographic images through appropriate positioning and technical factors. The technologist operates CT scanners, power injectors, and post-processing equipment. They adjust protocols to meet patient needs when necessary and critique completed procedures for high diagnostic quality. General radiography exams may also be performed as needed. Maintaining a repeat rate at or below the national standard is essential. Familiarity with terminology and procedures performed in all of Diagnostic Imaging is required. A working knowledge of front desk and file room procedures is important. The technologist communicates any delays to patients and explains procedures to ensure patient comfort. Obtaining thorough and pertinent patient history and preparing patients for examination is part of the role. The position encourages research at the technologist level and staying abreast of new procedures and exams in diagnostic imaging practice. The technologist selects the appropriate equipment and is aware of setup based on procedure protocol, specifications, and standards. They evaluate the technical quality of images and are able to record, archive, retrieve, compile, and calculate data. The technologist must be independently capable of assisting the radiologist during invasive procedures such as biopsies and abscess drainages. Positioning patients according to anatomy in question is crucial, along with providing accurate measurements. The technologist educates and clearly explains procedures before imaging and follows age-specific guidelines. Practicing positive patient identification is mandatory. Acquiring complete and appropriate patient history and conveying all pertinent information to the radiologist is essential. Conferring with radiologists regarding patient care and protocol as necessary is part of the position.
