As a Facilities Maintenance Worker II, you have a unique opportunity to change lives through exceptional service. This position is responsible for performing semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance of town parks, athletic fields, street right-of-ways, public green ways, and other Cary-maintained facilities and landscapes. While the work is principally in the area of landscaping, employees may assist with facility maintenance projects or be assigned to special teams as needed. The work of a Facilities Maintenance Worker II may require some weekend work or a flexed schedule. Facilities Maintenance positions are also "critical positions" requiring employees to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations to maintain equipment and/or assist the Facilities Management Division in any capacity necessary to continue operations. Typical Tasks Picks up trash and debris from grounds; Operates leaf collection equipment, mowers, and other landscape maintenance equipment; Works with hazardous weather response team for snow, ice, debris removal; Maintains special purpose athletic fields; prepares fields for play; Provides leadership to a small group of lower level workers or to others on temporary work assignment in carrying out an assignment; Reconditions turf and infields at Cary athletic facilities; Maintains and installs temporary fencing at Cary athletic fields; Maintains park equipment, grounds and facilities; performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; Operates landscape equipment including tractors and backhoes for loading and minor grading; Works with assigned crew to install retaining walls, scoreboards, walkways, and other construction projects related to landscaping; Assists with special events setup, takedown, and post event cleanup requirements; Applies herbicides and fertilizers under the direction of a lead worker; Installs landscape designs by planting ornamental trees and shrubs, annuals, perennials, herbs and bulbs; plants deciduous and evergreen plants; transplants materials for annual and perennial flower beds; Prunes ornamental trees and shrubbery to maintain proper shape and design and to ensure adequate ventilation and light to the plants interior; uses loppers, shears, bow saws, and hand pruners; Prepares planting beds to ensure that soil mixture is of correct texture and density and contains appropriate amounts of soil nutrients; Assists in preparing designs for landscaped areas, flower beds, and specialized planting areas; Assists other divisions as needed; Provides accurate work order data at the completion of each task; Performs other job-related tasks as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of turf management, landscaping and horticulture; General knowledge of plant growth characteristics and proper techniques for pruning and shaping; General knowledge of the species of flowers, trees, and shrubs indigenous to central North Carolina; General knowledge of the operation of tools associated with landscape and ball field maintenance; General knowledge of athletic field maintenance; General knowledge of the appropriate safety precautions of the work; Ability to work effectively in a team environment; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff and the general public; Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to lead a work team on occasion. Physical Requirements:Work in this class is medium to heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and rain. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders, walking for long periods and the endurance necessary to operate equipment. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs. Minimum and Preferred Qualifications Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in landscaping, turf management, construction, or related field. Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Requires possession of a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record, or the ability to earn within six months of hire. Requires National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS100 and ICS700 training/certification will be provided. Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
