JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing firefighting and paramedic duties. MAJOR DUTIES: Performs paramedic duties, including evaluation, care, and transport of critically injured or ill patients; performs emergency surgical procedures as necessary. Responds to fire emergencies; performs fire suppression duties; searches burning buildings for survivors; extinguishes fires by the use of hoses, manual tools, ladders, axes, and chain saws; performs overhaul after the fire has been extinguished; performs salvage duties during fire suppression to preserve property. Operates emergency vehicles, including ambulances, may operate ladder trucks, and fire apparatus. Cleans, inspects, and maintains all emergency response vehicles and equipment; documents needed repairs. May serve as primary Fire Apparatus Operator on fire apparatus or ladder truck. (FAO Certification maybe required.) Cleans and maintains stations. Prepares detailed incident and patient care reports Maintains and expands job knowledge, skills, and abilities; engages in training and/or continuing education programs. Maintains a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations. Assists in and conducts inspections of buildings to ensure compliance with fire codes and conducts investigations to determine the cause and origin of fires and related incidents. Assists with in-house and public outreach training programs. Participates in community outreach programs to advocate fire prevention and life safety. Performs special assignments such as installing child car safety seats and providing medical support to police tactical operations, or serving in the honor guard. Assumes command of incidents in the absence of senior officers. Fills in for Captains, engine operators, and field training officers within the scope of licensure and training. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service. Establish and maintain effective, tactful and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including various cultural and ethnic groups. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: Knowledge of fire suppression techniques, building construction, emergency vehicle operations, water supply, hazardous materials, emergency medicine, and rescue techniques. Knowledge of emergency response vehicles and related ancillary equipment. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, algebra, biology, and chemistry. Knowledge of vehicular and equipment maintenance and repair techniques. Knowledge of pump operations, water flow, and water supply for ladder truck and engines. Knowledge of fire and building codes. Knowledge of fire cause investigations. Knowledge of the geography and boundaries of the city. Skill in the operation of computers and various software programs. Skill in the installation of child safety seats. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in demonstrating an entrepreneurial spirit by generating new, innovative ideas and better methods to accomplish tasks and complete projects. Skill in demonstrating teamwork by contributing the overall success of the organization with flexibility, cooperation and communication. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Associates' degree preferred. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Missouri for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the certification standards as established by the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office and license requirements from the State of Missouri, Department of Health and Senior Services, Bureau of EMS. Missouri state licensed Paramedic or National Registry MO Firefighter I and II Certified, hazmat ops No routine facility-to-facility transfers Traditional 24/48 Schedule CPAT certification a plus Possess or able to obtain valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
