Purpose of the Position The VP of Accounting plays a pivotal role in overseeing the financial operations and regulatory compliance of the credit union. The VP of Accounting is responsible for managing financial and regulatory reporting, internal controls, budgeting, accounting operations, and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards. This position plays a leadership role ensuring a high performing team that is continually maximizing efficiency with a positive impact on the financial health of the credit union while providing excellent service to its stakeholders. Key Responsibilities Strategic HR Leadership: Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following: General Accounting and Reporting: Oversee the month-end close process, monthly reporting and variance analysis, quarterly Call Reports, weekly FR 2900 filings, general ledger account reconciliations, accounts payable Keeping internal financial records, issuing and receiving payments, generating reports, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, tax returns, recording payroll, oversee planning process as it pertains to NIIE, general ledger maintenance, monthly book close, GL account reconciliations, maintain policies Oversee reconciliations of general ledger accounts tied to high volume operations areas such as payments, loan servicing, fraud and disputes. Oversee the monthly Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL) process ensuring the process is compliant with GAAP. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate the accounting implications of new products and services or other key initiatives. Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Monitor budget vs. actual performance and provide analysis to support strategic decision-making. Present financial reports to senior management highlighting key financial metrics and trends. Oversee the month-end close, management reporting and provide audit support for the MCU Foundation. Accounting Operations: Oversee the activities of the Accounting Operations team and ATM Balancing team, ensuring efficient and accurate processing of the transactions and reconciliations managed by the teams. Ensure accounts payable invoices are processed efficiently, accurately and timely via the credit union's accounts payable system. Ensure the credit union's payment systems for checks and wires are handled securely, in compliance with relevant policies, procedures and regulatory requirements. Ensure accurate and timely reporting of the credit union's daily cash reporting and weekly FR 2900 filings. Internal Controls and Compliance: Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Conduct regular reviews of financial processes and procedures to identify areas for improvement and mitigate risks. Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures. Stay abreast of changes in accounting standards and regulatory guidelines, implementing necessary adjustments to ensure compliance. Audit Management: Serve as the Accounting representative for internal/external auditors during financial audits and regulatory examinations. Coordinate audit activities and provide requested documentation and explanations to support audit findings. Implement recommendations from auditors to enhance internal controls and accounting processes. Budgeting and Forecasting: Responsible for the overall integrity of the budgeting/planning process. Collaborate with the Director of Finance and department heads ensuring budgets are based on reasonable assumptions, are accurate and prepared timely. Serve as the subject matter expert on all accounting software tools used by the Accounting department (ProfitStars, Prologue, nCino, Concur, LeaseQuery, Fed Reporter, Symitar and related modules) Review and ensure application of appropriate internal controls, compliance and financial procedures. Monitor key financial metrics and performance indicators, analyzing trends and identifying areas for improvement or risk mitigation. Provide all deliverables in accordance with prescribed timelines. Serves as accounting subject matter expert and cross-functionally supports projects and programs. Provides insight and recommendations to both short-term and long-term growth plans, and helps establish yearly financial objectives that align with the credit union's goals. Supports new business initiatives and new product offerings by providing decision support analysis. Perform other related duties as requested and special projects as assigned Experience and Professional Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA or CPA strongly preferred. 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting, with a minimum of 5 years in an accounting leadership position at a similarly sized bank or credit union. In-depth knowledge of GAAP, regulatory compliance, and financial reporting requirements for banks. Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze complex financial data and draw actionable insights. Proven leadership abilities, with experience managing teams and driving results in a collaborative environment. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate accounting concepts to diverse audiences and influence decision-making processes. Strategic mindset and forward-thinking approach, with the ability to anticipate challenges and develop proactive solutions. Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Excel; experience with banking systems such as Symitar core banking platforms is a plus. Demonstrated success in planning, organizing, leading people and activities. Ability to motivate, direct and coach staff. Ability to perform in a high-volume environment and meet deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail. Technologically proficient.
